SEOUL, KOREA – Good news for credit card member stores in fears of security breaches. A new POS smart pad with hardware encryption will make its debut next month. On Sunday, ASG Korea announced that it will release the iPOS (a POS system based on the Apple iPad) in March. This hardware encryption-based POS system consists of an iPad unit and a receipt printer manufactured by a Korean SME.
Hardware encryption solutions are designed to accelerate cryptoprocesses as soon as a credit card is swiped through the POS’s card reader. Since passwords are descrambled in a separate server, customers can use their credit cards with a sense of security. Global credit card companies like Visa and Master Card have actually recommended this type of POS systems, but such a system has yet to be introduced to Korea.
The iPOS combines an iPad unit with a card reader produced by the US’s MagTek, which takes up 75% of the global card reader market with its hardware encryption technology.
