SEOUL, KOREA – Relatively more affordable direct-lit LED BLUs (Back Light Unit) have emerged as the LCD market’s mainstream. Direct-lit LED BLUs, which had been preferred by a few, such as Samsung Electronics and some other Chinese TV manufacturers, up until last year, has started to find favor with a majority of companies this year.
According to the industry, the share of direct-lit LED BLUs in the LCD TV market is projected to exceed 20% in the first quarter of this year.
CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) BLU LCD shipments, which accounted for 30% in 2012, slumped to 10%, giving way to LED BLU LCDs, of which relatively low-cost direct-lit LED BLUs are fast gaining popularity.
The most aggressive adopter of direct-lit LED BLUs is Samsung Electronics, which is increasing the number of its direct-lit LED BLUs models after unveiling a direct-lit LED TV model in the first half of last year.
LG Electronics is also planning to raise the share of direct-lit LEDs in its LCD TVs to 50% by year end.
