SEOUL, KOREA – With the onset of mobile apps that delete data by initializing smartphone operating systems, law enforcement authorities’ responses to mobile digital forensics are urgently needed.
The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office (SPO) has recently made moves to come up with countermeasures, but the SPO’s response is still in its infancy.
An official from the SPO, said on Monday, “Our recent effort to respond to mobile data-erasing malware is limited to contracting out studies on data-easting tactics.” It means that the SPO has yet to delve into ways to fully restore smartphone data. As a Korean smartphone user presented his smartphone as evidence to prove the existence of data-erasing malware, the SPO posted RFPs (Request for Proposal) on ways to counteract mobile data-erasing tactics on Korea On-line E-Procurement System (www.g2b.go.kr).
Yet, it will take a while to hammer out ways to analyze damaged data. As of now, the restoration of the iOS is impossible once it was initialized by a smartphone data-erasing app. Besides, the full-scale restoration of the Android OS is also unattainable.
The official continued, “Our efforts will be a starting point for research on mobile data forensics. But since no attempts to explore this issue have been made so far, it will be difficult to thrash out detailed responses.”
