SEOUL, KOREA - SK telecom is going to work together with Ericsson, the world’s leading communications devices maker, to jointly develop LTE-Advanced (LTE-A).
The local telecommunications giant (represented by Ha Seong-min) signed an agreement with the global No. 1 communications devices maker (represented by Hans Vestberg) to jointly develop LTE-A technology scheduled to be commercialized around the second half of the year.
Base on the agreement, the two parties will develop and demonstrate a technology for differentiated LTE-A service. And they will also build up cooperation in developing the ‘Small Cell’ (compact base station) technology. And the two companies are also planning to turn a compact base station and a base station into a virtualized one station and to demonstrate ‘LTE-A Super Cell 1.0’ that addresses the handover issue which takes place around the boundary areas between base stations. The local telecommunications service provider plans to apply ‘Super Cell 1.0’ to LTE-A network as early as the second half of the year.
Behind such a movement of the two parties lies the rapid global trend of establishing ‘Small Cell’ as it could address data traffic issue and improve investment efficiency.
SK텔레콤-에릭슨, LTE-A 공동협력 협약
SK텔레콤이 LTE-어드밴스드(LTE-A)를 위해 글로벌 1위 통신장비업체 에릭슨과 손을 잡았다.
SK텔레콤(대표 하성민)은 24일(현지시각) 스페인 바르셀로나에서 에릭슨(대표 한스 베스트베리)과 하반기 상용화 예정인 LTE-A 기술 공동개발 협약을 체결했다. 협약식에는 최진성 SK텔레콤 ICT기술원장과 토마스 노렌 에릭슨 엑세스 사업총괄이 참석했다.
협약에 따라 양사는 LTE-A 서비스 차별화를 위한 기술을 공동 개발해 시연하고, 세계적으로 확장 추세에 있는 `스몰셀(소형 기지국)` 관련 기술 협력도 강화한다. 또 MWC에서 양사는 스몰셀과 대형 기지국을 가상화된 하나의 셀로 구성, 기지국 간 경계지역에서 발생하는 핸드오버를 해소하는 `LTE-A 슈퍼셀 1.0`을 공동 시연한다. SK텔레콤은 이르면 하반기 슈퍼셀 1.0을 LTE-A 네트워크에 적용할 계획이다.
양사가 스몰셀에 집중하는 것은 데이터 트래픽 분산과 투자 효율성을 높일 수 있어 스몰셀 구축이 세계적으로 급격히 확산되기 때문이다.
영국 시장조사기관 인포마(Informa)는 지난해 세계에 구축된 스몰셀 650만개가 올해 말에는 1500만개로 2.3배 증가하고, 2016년에는 14배 증가한 9100만개까지 늘어날 것으로 예상했다.
최진성 SK텔레콤 ICT기술원장은 “국내 1위 통신사업자와 세계 1위 통신장비 업체 간 긴밀한 기술협력을 통해 올해 하반기에 선보일 LTE-A에서 경쟁사와는 차원이 다른 서비스를 선보이겠다”고 밝혔다.
토마스 노렌 에릭슨 엑세스 사업총괄은 “세계에서 가장 빨리 네트워크가 진화하는 한국시장에서 지속적인 기술력 우위를 다지고 네트워크 최고 강자인 SK텔레콤과 긴밀한 기술협력을 통해 LTE-A 시장도 선도하겠다”고 말했다.
