SEOUL, KOREA - LG Electronics is going to acquire a mobile operating system of ‘webOS’ from HP to enhance its S/W capability that in turn would enable the company to actively respond to the upcoming smart TV platform competition.
The local home appliances maker announced yesterday that it had signed an agreement with the US-based global IT corporation to obtain the source code, developers and documents in regard to ‘webOS’ and struck a relevant licensing deal as well. LG also added that such a deal was to advance next generation technical innovation of its smart TV platform and to rapidly respond to the ongoing changes in web-based smart TV technology.
“We are going to run a new R&D center by investing in Silicon Valley where innovative R&D capabilities are concentrated. LG’s technology coming with webOS will deliver a differentiated experience of LG smart TV to customers in the global market,” says Ahn Seung-gwon, the CTO of LG Electronics.
The local electronic goods maker also plans to continue to take over HP’s other open source projects: ‘Open webOS’ that discloses the source code of ‘webOS’ for developers; and ‘Enyo’, a web-based application development framework.

LG전자는 HP와 웹OS의 소스코드, 개발인력, 문서를 인수하는 계약을 체결하고 관련 특허계약도 맺었다고 26일 밝혔다. 자체 스마트TV 플랫폼의 차세대 기술혁신을 앞당기고 웹을 기반으로 한 스마트TV 기술 변화에 신속하게 대응하기 위한 조치라고 설명했다.
안승권 LG전자 최고기술책임자(CTO) 사장은 “혁신적 연구개발(R&D) 역량이 밀집된 미국 실리콘밸리에 투자해 새로운 R&D 연구소를 운영하게 됐다”며 “웹OS와 LG전자의 기술력이 만나 전 세계 소비자에게 LG 스마트TV의 차별화된 경험을 제공할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
LG전자는 웹OS의 소스코드를 개발자용으로 공개한 `오픈 웹OS`와 웹 기반 애플리케이션 개발 프레임워크인 `엔요(Enyo)` 등 HP의 오픈소스 프로젝트를 이어받아 지속적으로 추진할 계획이다.
