SEOUL, KOREA – At an upscale restaurant MontJuic in Barcelona was a gathering of mobile phone chip makers and telecom operators waiting to get their hands on a prototype smartphone equipped with Tizen 2.0 that was unveiled on February 18.
Though the Tizen-2.0 powered smartphone has yet to be commercially available, it looked very different from Firefox OS-based smartphones disclosed at the MWC 2013.
While Firefox smartphones, released by ZTE and TCL Communications, come with a 3.5 inch display screen, the Tizen smartphone unveiled at the swanky restaurant seemed to have an over 4 inch display.
Once an app was run, the back button and the menu button did not work. An on-screen back button appeared in the app. On the user interface front, the home screen was a collection of icons. The Tizen phone featured round-shaped icons arranged in five rows on the screen.
Yet, the Tizen smartphone was a prototype, so making attempts to compare it squarely with Firefox smartphones was difficult.

[MWC2013]완전히 새로운 '타이젠폰' 직접 써보니…
스페인 바르셀로나 몬주익 언덕의 고급 레스토랑.
완전히 새로운 오픈 환경을 원하는 휴대폰 및 칩 제조사, 통신사가 모였다. 이곳에서 지난 18일 공개된 `타이젠2.0`이 탑재된 개발용 단말기를 직접 볼 수 있었다.
상용 제품은 아니지만 이번 MWC에서 공개된 파이어폭스폰과 확연한 차이가 느껴진다.
ZTE와 TCL커뮤니케이션즈가 내놓은 파이어폭스폰이 3.5인치 디스플레이인데 반해 타이젠폰은 4인치 이상 돼 보이는 화면을 장착했다. 기존 안드로이드 단말기에 타이젠 OS를 탑재한 제품으로 보인다. 중앙에 물리버튼과 뒤로가기, 메뉴 버튼이 있다. 앱을 실행하면 뒤로가기와 메뉴버튼은 작동하지 않는다. 앱 내부에 뒤로가기 버튼이 나타난다.
타이젠폰 사용자환경(UI)은 동그란 아이콘이 특징이다. 화면에 5줄의 아이콘이 배치되도록 구성됐다. 앱이 어느 정도 실행됐는지 볼 수 있게 화면 중앙에 초록색 진행줄이 표시되는 것이 특징이다. HTML5 앱 특성을 고려한 표시다.
타이젠폰은 전화와 메시지, 인터넷 브라우저 등 많이 쓰는 아이콘을 맨 아래 배치하는 않았다. 개발용 단말기여서 아직 정돈이 되지 않은 인상이다.
타이젠 스토어를 실행했다. 스포츠센터라는 카테고리가 맨 위에 보인다. 무료 애플리케이션 소개를 비롯해 게임과 각종 유틸리티 앱을 구분해 원하는 앱을 다운로드 받을 수 있게 구성됐다.
게임로프트가 개발한 `아스팔트7 히트`이라는 자동차 경주 게임을 시작했다. 성능이 떨어진다고 느낄 수 없을 만큼 부드럽게 자동차 운전 게임을 즐길 수 있다.
상용화 단말기가 아니어서 파이어폭스 등과 직접적인 비교는 어렵지만 두 오픈 OS는 서로 다른 시장을 타깃으로 하는 것이 확실해 보인다.
