SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics has moved into the Central and South American mobile telecommunications market.
The local electronic goods maker announced that it had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Movistar, an affiliate of Telefonica Chile which is the largest telecommunications service provider in Chile, on Fed. 26 to provide commercialized network solutions including LTE base stations.
Telefonica is a super-sized global telecommunications company, having 280 million subscribers from 25 European and Latin American countries.
Based on the agreement, the local home appliances giant is going to establish nationwide LTE network in 16 major cities of Chile together with the global telecommunications service provider, gaining a foothold to expand its LTE business in the European and Latin American markets later.
“Thanks to the agreement, we are delighted to introduce our cutting-edge LTE network technology to the Latin American market that is showing the fastest growth out of all global mobile markets. Samsung will provide innovative LTE service to the subscribers of Telefonica Chile based on its experiences and technology built up in such advanced markets as Korea, the US and Japan,” says Kim Yung-gi, the vice president of the company’s network business division.

삼성전자가 중남미 이동통신 시장에 진입했다.
삼성전자는 지난 26일 칠레 최대 이동통신사업자 텔레포니카 칠레(Movistar)와 LTE 기지국을 포함한 상용 네트워크 솔루션을 공급하기 위한 전략적 파트너십 계약을 체결했다고 밝혔다.
텔레포니카는 유럽, 중남미를 중심으로 25개국 2억8000만명 이상의 가입자를 보유한 대표적인 대형 글로벌 통신사업자다.
이번 계약으로 삼성전자는 올해 텔레포니카 칠레와 칠레 주요 16개 도시를 중심으로 전국적인 LTE 네트워크를 구축하게 됐다. 향후 유럽 및 중남미시장 LTE 사업을 본격적으로 확대할 수 있는 발판을 마련했다.
김영기 삼성전자 네트워크사업부장 부사장은 “이번 계약으로 전 세계 모바일 시장에서 가장 가파른 성장세를 보이고 있는 중남미 시장에 삼성의 앞선 LTE 네트워크를 소개하게 되어 기쁘다”며 “삼성은 한국·미국·일본 등 LTE 선도시장에서의 앞선 상용화 경험과 기술력을 바탕으로 텔레포니카 칠레의 가입자들에게 LTE 서비스 혁신을 선사할 것” 이라고 밝혔다.
