SEOUL, KOREA – SK Telecom and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) have signed an agreement to build next-generation smart base stations.
Under the agreement, SK Telecom will evaluate NSN’s newly launched Liquid Applications in its LTE network in the first half of this year. Accordinly, SK Telecom is on track to become the world’s first telecom operator that tests NSN’s Liquid Applications in the LTE environment.
NSN’s Liquid Applications is a network technology, which aims to help telecom operators provide personalized mobile broadband experiences to subscribers at the fastest clip by turning base stations into content servers. Liquid Applications allow application data to flow across mobile operator networks to base stations where it can be delivered instantly to local subscribers.
NSN’s Liquid Applications will be applied to the Korean telecom operator’s Service-Aware RAN, an intelligent base station that provides customers with a unique, more advanced mobile experience through a wide range of custom-tailored services.

SK텔레콤-NSN 똑똑한 차세대 LTE 기지국 개발 나선다
SK텔레콤은 노키아지멘스네트웍스(NSN)와 차세대 기지국 구축을 위한 협약을 맺었다고 밝혔다.
SKT는 NSN `리퀴드 애플리케이션` 기술을 상반기에 테스트한다. 롱텀에벌루션(LTE) 환경에서 `리퀴드 애플리케이션`을 테스트하는 세계 최초 사업자가 될 전망이다.
리퀴드 애플리케이션은 이동통신 사업자가 맞춤형 모바일 서비스를 제공하도록 지원하는 애플리케이션 플랫폼 기술이다.
이 기술을 적용하면 각종 서비스를 기지국 자체에 실어 고객에게 가장 빠른 전송을 보장한다.
분산 처리와 저장, 실시간 무선 네트워크 데이터 수집·분석 등 다양한 기능을 활용해 지역별 특화·고객 맞춤형 서비스도 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
리퀴드 애플리케이션은 SK텔레콤이 준비 중인 `Service Aware RAN`에 적용된다. `Service Aware RAN`은 기본적인 음성〃데이터 통신 기능만을 제공하는 현재 기지국과 달리 한 차원 진보된 개인화 서비스 플랫폼을 통해 각종 데이터와 서비스를 기지국 자체에 저장해 인근에 위치한 고객 단말에 직접 전송해주는 `지능형` 기지국을 의미한다.
최진성 SK텔레콤 ICT 기술원장은 “많은 이동통신사업자들이 데이터 전송을 최적화하는 것 이상의 혁신 방안을 적극적으로 찾는다”며 “NSN과 긴밀한 협력을 통해 고객 모바일 라이프에 변화를 가져올 차세대 네트워크 기술을 개발·적용하겠다”고 밝혔다.
