SEOUL, KOREA – The Korean government and industries have joined forces to carry out an international standardization project aimed to catapult the Korean touchscreen industry into the world’s No.2 position by 2020.
On Tuesday, Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA) and Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), part of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE), said they have thrashed out a strategy for the international standardization of next-generation displays at the Display Standard Experts’ Workshop, held recently.
KDIA and KATS agreed to push for the international standardization of displays in order to take on the global touchscreen market that is projected to grow to USD 20 billion by 2015.
As of now, Taiwan is leading the global touch screen market, followed by Japan, China, the US and Korea.
The Korean touchscreen industry is keen on the development of technology-intensive, high value added products such as in-cell touchscreen displays (an integration of the capacitive touch-sensing technology into the display panel itself).
At the upcoming IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) TC (Technical Committee) 110’s general meeting, scheduled for August this year, KATS will present an international standardization plan aimed to disperse in-cell touchscreen displays that are being developed by Korean companies.

정부-업계, 터치스크린 국제표준화 본격화
정부와 업계가 손잡고 `2020년 터치스크린 산업 세계 2강 달성`을 위한 국제 표준화 사업을 추진한다.
지식경제부 기술표준원과 한국디스플레이산업협회는 최근 `디스플레이 표준화 전문가 워크숍`을 갖고 차세대 디스플레이 국제 표준화 전략을 마련했다고 5일 밝혔다.
기표원과 디스플레이협회는 오는 2015년 200억달러로 예상되는 세계 터치스크린 시장에 적극적으로 대응하기 위해 국제 표준화에 힘쓰기로 했다.
현재 세계 터치스크린 시장은 대만이 주도하고 있다. 한국은 일본, 중국, 미국에 이어 5위권이다.
국내 터치스크린 업계는 이를 극복하기 위해 디스플레이 일체형 터치스크린 등 기술 집약적 고부가가치 제품 개발에 주력하고 있다.
기표원은 한국 업체가 개발 중인 일체형 방식을 확산하기 위해 관련 국제 표준안을 오는 8월 경주에서 열리는 국제표준화기구 디스플레이 기술위원회(IEC TC 110) 정기총회에서 제안할 계획이다. IEC TC 110 내에 터치스크린 작업반도 신설할 방침이다.
윤종구 기표원 신산업표준과장은 “터치스크린 연구개발과 표준을 효율적으로 연계해 산업화를 촉진하겠다”며 “우리나라 터치스크린 산업이 2020년 세계 2강을 달성할 수 있도록 국제표준화를 적극 지원하겠다”고 말했다.
