SEOUL, KOREA – In this digital era, a system that allows busy people to pay condolences in a remote fashion has been patented. Developer Tae-woong Choi, professor at KAIST (the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), has recently patented this system.
This remote condolence system features a video system installed at funerals to allow those who cannot attend the funeral service to convey their condolences to the bereaved. After they express sympathy to someone who is grieving the death of a loved one, they can send condolence money electronically via its instant payment system.
Once this system is commercialized, it will spare people working on a tight schedule the burden of going all the way to funeral services held in remote areas.
“Though Korea’s funeral customs have helped Korean society maintain the culture of sharing at a time of need, it is also true that our busy contemporaries have been burdened by such practices. This system is designed to succeed Korea’s unique funeral customs while helping sympathetic people overcome time and spatial constraints,” said Professor Choi.

KAIST, 원격 문상시스템 특허 `이색`
디지털 시대를 반영한 원격 문상 시스템이 특허로 등록돼 화제가 되고 있다.
최태웅 KAIST 전문교수가 발명한 이 시스템은 최근 특허청으로부터 특허 등록을 받았다.
이 시스템은 해당 특정 지역에 문상 공간을 마련하고 영상 시스템을 설치해 다른 지역에 있는 장례식장의 상주와 연결, 문상할 수 있도록 한 것이 특징이다. 조의금도 문상 후 즉석에서 결제시스템을 통해 전송된다.
문상객이 굳이 원거리에 있는 장례식장을 직접 찾지 않고 지역 근처 문상방을 찾아 조문함으로써 장례식장을 방문한 것과 같은 효과를 볼 수 있는 것이 특징이다.
이 시스템이 사업화되면 장례식장이 원거리에 있을 때 직장인이 문상을 위해 휴가를 내야 하는 부담을 줄일 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.
최 교수는 “우리 민족의 장례 문화는 상부상조의 아름다운 전통을 이어왔지만, 바쁜 현대인에게 많은 부담을 주는 것도 사실”이라며 “이번 발명은 우리 고유의 장례문화를 계승하되 시간과 공간의 제약을 극복하기 위해 고안하게 됐다”고 말했다.
