SEOUL, KOREA – On the back of the Galaxy S4, slated to be launched this month, Korean producers of ferrite sheets, the key component of NFC, is charging ahead in the market. Korean producers are increasing their share of the global ferrite sheet, which has been monopolized by Japan’s Maruwa.
On Tuesday, industry insiders said that Amotech, EMW, TODA-ISU Corporation and Maruwa launched into the mass-production of ferrite sheets for the Galaxy S4 after they were chosen as suppliers of ferrite sheets.
Ferrite sheets are indispensable materials that are inserted into smartphones along with an antenna to make the smartphone NFC-enabled.
In expectations of high demand for ferrite sheets, TODA-ISU Corporation, a joint venture between Japan’s Toda and Korea’s ISU Chemical, turned its production lines for cathode active materials for lithium ion secondary batteries into ones for ferrite sheets.
Amotech and EMW will supply both ferrite sheets and NFC antennas. Amotech, capable of churning out 10 million ferrite sheets per month, has provided Samsung with its products since the Galaxy S3.
As global smartphone makers, including Nokia, Lenovo, Huawei and ZTE, are increasingly releasing NFC-enabled smartphones, the ferrite sheets maker is expected to grow even further.

갤럭시S4, NFC 페라이트시트 시장 판도 바꿨다
이달 출시를 앞둔 삼성전자 갤럭시S4 덕분에 근거리무선통신(NFC) 핵심 소재인 페라이트시트(Ferrite Sheet) 시장에서 국내 업체들이 약진하고 있다. 일본 마루와가 사실상 독점하고 있던 시장에 한국 기업들이 진출, 점유율을 넓혀가고 있다.
12일 업계에 따르면 아모텍•EMW•토다이수•마루와가 각각 갤럭시S4 NFC 페라이트시트 소재 공급사로 선정돼 양산에 돌입한 것으로 파악됐다.
NFC 페라이트시트는 스마트폰에 NFC 기능을 탑재할 때 안테나와 함께 부착하는 필수 소재다. NFC 신호를 증폭시켜 안테나에서 신호를 수신할 수 있는 반경 거리를 약 4~5cm 가량 넓혀준다. 약 50㎜×60㎜ 크기에 90μm 두께의 스티커 형태가 주로 쓰인다.
일본 토다공업과 이수화학이 합작 설립한 토다이수는 최근 2차전지용 양극활물질 생산 공정을 NFC 페라이트시트용으로 전환했다. 이 회사는 니켈코발트망간(NCM) 계열 양극활물질 양산을 위해 강원도 원주에 제조 시설을 가동하고 있었지만 페라이트시트 공급량이 늘 것으로 예상, 서둘러 시설을 교체했다. 규모는 월 500만장 규모로 추정된다.
아모텍과 EMW는 NFC 안테나와 페라이트시트 소재를 함께 공급한다. 아모텍은 월 1000만장 규모의 양산 시설을 갖추고 갤럭시S3부터 납품해왔다. 공급량이 늘 것에 대비, 자체 소재 이외에 2차 협력사를 물색 중인 것으로 알려졌다.
EMW 역시 안테나와 시트를 함께 생산한다. 올해 총 30억원을 투자해 인천 생산 라인을 확장했고, 시트 생산량을 연 2000만장까지 늘릴 예정이다.
업계 관계자는 “초기 마루와가 독점하던 시장이지만 이제는 한국 업체가 기선을 잡았다”며 “삼성전자•LG전자가 NFC 기능이 장착된 스마트폰 시장을 대부분 차지하고 있기 때문에 국내 기업들이 페라이트시트 시장 점유율을 공격적으로 확대할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
새롭게 진출한 대기업도 있다. SKC는 최근 페라이트시트를 개발, 양산 테스트를 진행 중이다. 올해 안에 양산한다는 목표다.
세계적으로도 노키아, 중국 레노버•화웨이•ZTE 등이 NFC 기능을 탑재한 스마트폰을 점점 늘려가면서 업계는 페라이트시트 시장이 더욱 확대될 것으로 기대하고 있다.
