SEOUL, KOREA – SK Telecom said Sunday it will build up its multi carrier (MC) networks in downtown areas in each city and ratchet up efforts to lay the groundwork for LTE-Advanced, a major enhancement of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard.
SK Telecom has completed the building of MC networks in 158 busy streets near universities nationwide and is planning on expanding its MC networks in major areas in each city.
As the multi-carrier (MC) technology chooses the faster one between the two frequency bands for LTE communications, mobile data traffic is optimally distributed to each frequency band, preventing network overload. SK Telecom developed MC technology to utilize both its existing 800MHz frequency band and the new 1.8GHz band.
SKT’s pushes for MC buildups have come as part of its endeavors to get a head start in the building of LTE-A networks. LTE-A’s maximum speed is 150Mbps, more than twice higher than the current 75Mbps and 10 times faster than 3G. SK Telecom aims to commercialize LTE-A before September of this year.

SK텔레콤(대표 하성민)이 멀티캐리어(MC) 망을 전국 시 단위 번화가에 확대 구축하며 LTE어드밴스트(LTE-A)망 초석 다지기에 박차를 가한다고 24일 밝혔다.
SK텔레콤은 전국 158개 대학가에 MC 구축을 완료했고, 상반기 중 전국 시단위 주요 지역에 MC 구축을 확대할 예정이다.
MC는 서로 다른 두 개의 LTE 주파수 중 더 빠른 대역을 선택해 사용하는 기술이다. 최고 속도는 75Mbps로 일반 LTE와 동일하나 트래픽이 몰려도 막힘이 없어 갑절 빠른 체감 속도를 제공한다. SK텔레콤은 850㎒ 대역과 1.8㎓ 대역을 LTE로 사용 중이다.
SK텔레콤의 MC 확대 구축은 LTE-A망 구축에서 우위를 점하려는 포석이다. LTE-A는 최고 속도가 150Mbps로 기존 LTE 속도의 갑절, 3G 속도의 10배에 달한다. SK텔레콤은 올해 9월 이전에 LTE-A를 상용화할 계획이다.
멀티캐리어와 LTE-A는 기지국에 어떤 소프트웨어를 활용하는지만 다를 뿐 장비는 동일하다. 일단 MC를 구축하면 LTE-A 스마트폰 출시와 함께 기지국 소프트웨어 업그레이드만으로 빠르게 LTE-A 상용 서비스 제공이 가능하다.
권혁상 SK텔레콤 네트워크부문장은 “올해 상반기가 지나면 전국 번화가에서 막힘없는 속도의 LTE를 체감할 수 있을 것”이라며 “9월 전까지 해당 지역을 중심으로 갑절 빠른 LTE를 가장 먼저 선보이겠다”고 밝혔다.
