SEOUL, KOREA – Japanese chemical producer Sumitomo Chemical will invest USD 300 million in building up its touch sensor production facility in Gyeonggi-do.
The Gyeonggi-do government said Sunday that it signed an investment agreement with Sumitomo Chemical at Dongwoo Fine-Chem’s plant in Pyeongtaek.
Dongwoo Fine-Chem, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical, will build its second touch sensor production facility in Poseung Industrial Complex by next year. Eighty production workers will be hired and indirect employment of approximately 3,200 is anticipated.
Dongwoo Fine-Chem has invested a total of KRW 1.44 trillion in LCD film and relevant parts businesses in Pyeongtaek. It posted KRW 2.3 trillion in sales last year.
The Gyeonggi-do government said Japanese companies’ investment in Gyeonggi-do has recently surged. FCC, a Japan-based manufacturer of clutches for two-wheeled vehicles, and Nippon Electric Glass (NEG), a Japan-based manufacturer of specialty glass for LCD, have already made investments in Gyeonggi-do. A total of USD 856 million has been invested by Japanese companies this year.
“We will unsparingly offer administrative support for Dongwoo Fine-Chem’s successful business in our province,” said Kim Moon-soo, Governor of Gyeonggi-do.

日스미토모, 평택에 터치센서 생산시설 증축
일본 스미토모화학이 3억달러를 투자해 경기도에 스마트폰용 터치센서 생산시설을 증축한다.
경기도는 평택 포승산업단지 동우화인켐 공장에서 스미토모화학과 이같은 내용의 투자 협약을 맺었다고 24일 밝혔다. 스미토모화학 자회사인 동우화인켐은 내년까지 포승산업단지 부지에 터치센서 제조설비를 증축한다. 생산인력 80명의 직접 고용과 3200여명의 간접고용 효과가 기대된다.
동우화인켐은 터치센서 생산라인 1기를 운영하고 있다. 이번 협약을 통해 이달 말 추가로 1기 구축을 시작한다는 계획이다. 이 회사는 지금까지 평택에 총 1조4395억원을 투자해 LCD용 필름과 관련 부품 사업을 추진하고 있다. 지난해 2조3000억원의 매출을 달성했다.
경기도는 최근 일본 기업의 투자가 급증하고 있다고 밝혔다. 스미토모화학에 앞서 올들어 이륜차 클러치 생산업체 FCC와 LCD 유리원판 생산업체 NEG가 경기도에 투자했다. 올해 일본기업의 총 투자금액은 8억5600만달러다.
김문수 경기도지사는 “동우화인켐의 성공적인 사업을 위해 행정지원을 아끼지 않겠다”며 “일본 대표단 파견, 관련 기업 투자상담 등 다양한 방안을 강구해 최근 급증하는 일본기업의 경기도 투자를 더욱 촉진할 것”이라고 말했다.
