Seoul, Korea - The Smart TV Alliance was established in June last year led by LG Electronics to develop general-purpose smart TV apps, and the Alliance is now trying to secure as many application developers as possible, according to LG Electronics on the 22nd.
The Alliance has jointly developed the Software Development Kit (SDK). When the Alliance was launched, there were only three member companies, but as of the earlier this year, eight companies were in the Alliance, and the number has grown to 13 now. LG Electronics, Toshiba, Panasonic, IBM, TP Vision, Obigo, Opera Software and other companies are the members of Alliance.
The Smart TV Alliance is to kick-off the ‘Joint QA Pilot Program’ to support the developers. It is a program that will help the apps developed with the SDK will easily be adopted to the TV sets of member companies by detecting the bugs to enhance the quality of applications.
The Alliance is to hold a developers’ event on the 25th and 26th of this month. The event will be held as a supplementary event at the Next Web to take place in Amsterdam and present awards to the winners of competition for application development using the SDK.
LG Electronics is expecting more developers will participate as the smart TV market keeps expanding. An LG person commented, “the number of applications developed by our SDK is not large, because the market is still young, but it will start to grow soon.” At the moment, there are 5 apps developed by the Alliance’s SDK.

스마트TV얼라이언스(연합)`가 스마트TV 애플리케이션(앱) 개발 확산에 박차를 가한다. 앱 개발을 돕는 추가 프로그램을 만들고, 참여 확산을 위한 이벤트도 개최한다.
22일 LG전자에 따르면 스마트TV얼라이언스에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 가운데 연합체는 잠재 수요자인 앱 개발자 확보를 위한 노력에 힘을 쏟고 있다.
LG전자가 주도하는 스마트TV연합은 범용 스마트TV 앱 개발을 목표로 작년 6월 출범했다. 앱 개발 도구인 소프트웨어개발자도구(SDK)를 공동으로 개발했다. SDK로 개발한 앱은 스마트TV연합에 속한 제조사 스마트TV에서 모두 구동된다. 참여 회원사는 출범 당시 3개사에 불과했으나 올해 초 8개사로 늘었다. 올 들어 계속 증가하며 현재 13개사로 확대됐다. LG전자 이외에 도시바•파나소닉•IBM•TP비전•오비고•오페라소프트웨어 등이 참여한다.
스마트TV연합은 앱 개발사 참여 확대에 대비, 개발사 지원 `조인트 품질보증(QA) 파일럿 프로그램`을 가동한다. SDK로 개발한 앱이 회원사 TV에 쉽게 등록되도록 돕는 프로그램이다. 앱 구동 중 오류 발생 여부를 테스트한다. SDK로 개발하는 앱 품질 수준을 높여주는 효과가 기대된다.
스마트TV연합 `개발자 자문위원회`도 이르면 상반기 출범한다. SDK 활용 앱 개발 과정에서 어려움을 자문한다. 개발 간접 지원 역할을 하는 셈이다.
이달 25•26일 이틀간 개발자 이벤트도 개최한다. 네덜란드 암스테르담에서 열리는 `넥스트 웹(The Next Web)`에서 부대행사로 열린다. SDK로 앱 개발 경쟁을 펼쳐, 우수 업체를 시상한다.
LG전자는 스마트TV 시장 확대와 함께 개발자 참여가 늘어날 것으로 보고 있다. 회사 관계자는 “시장이 초창기여서 아직 많지는 않지만 SDK 개발 앱이 늘어날 것”이라고 말했다. 현재 SDK로 개발한 TV 앱은 5개다.
앱 개발업계는 스마트TV연합을 높이 평가하면서도 활성화에는 다소 시간이 걸릴 것이란 시각이다. TV앱 개발사 대표는 “연합체가 없었다면 TV제조사별로 만나 개발을 제안해야 하고 각 TV 플랫폼별로 개발해야 한다. 개발사에는 상당한 부담”이라며 “다만 지금 시장이 열리지 않은 만큼 개발비 지원을 해준다면 참여업체가 늘어날 것”이라고 말했다. 스마트폰 앱 개발사 대표는 “스마트폰용으로 개발한 앱을 TV용으로 변환하기 위해서는 대략 1000만원가량 소요된다”며 “시장 초기에는 유인책을 써야 개발에 적극 나설 것”이라고 제안했다.
