SEOUL, KOREA – Armed with a new patented technology, LG Electronics has set out to develop a new product. According to US IT magazine Engadget and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), LG Electronics has patented a novel method for utilizing head-mounted displays. The patent states that when you're staring at content on a device like a tablet PC and smart TV, the HMD (head-mounted display) is inactive. But turn your head or the device away and that same content will automatically fade into view right in front of your bespectacled eyes, according to Engadget.
Once LG Electronics succeeds in commercializing this technology, it is expected to compete against Google Glass (a wearable computer with a HMD).

LG `안경에 TV화면 띄운다` 특허 등록
LG전자가 `구글글라스`를 연상시키는 특허기술을 등록하며 신제품 개발에 뛰어들었다.
25일 미국 IT 전문매체 엔가젯과 미국 특허상표청(USPTO)에 따르면 LG전자는 최근 스마트TV나 태블릿PC에서 보던 TV화면을 안경 형태의 기기로 옮겨서 보여주는 특허(미국 특허번호 8,427,396)를 등록했다.
TV를 볼 때는 안경이 투명한 상태로 있다가 시선을 돌리면 안경에서 직접 영상이 재생되고, 다시 시선을 TV쪽으로 향하면 안경이 본래대로 투명해지는 기술이다. 이 기술을 적용한 제품이 상용화되면 구글글라스와 본격 경쟁하게 될 전망이다.
LG전자 관계자는 “이 기술을 활용한 헤드마운트디스플레이(HMD) 제품에 대한 기술적 검토를 진행중"이라고 전했다.
