Seoul, Korea - Samsung Electronics announced on the 30th that it started to mass-produce 20 Nano class 4Gb Low-Power DDR3 mobile RAM (LPDDR3).
The new RAM can process data at the same level as the existing PC DRAMs at the speed of 2,133Mbps. LPDDR3 is twice or even faster than the existing LPDDR2 and can handle 17 Gb of data, equivalent to 3 full HD movies’ worth data in one second. With this RAM applied, a smartphone with 5 inch and larger screen can play the full HD movies on a real-time basis. The new mobile DRAM is expected to be applied to the premium smartphones to be launched later this year.
20 Nano class 2Gb LPDDR3 mobile DRAM has 30% faster speed than 30 Nano class LPDDR3, consuming 20% less power. It is also the thinnest in the world, measuring only 0.8mm.
Samsung Electronics plans to constantly increase its portion of 20 Nano class mobile DRAM production to strengthen its competitiveness in memory business.
Gartner, the market research firm, anticipated global DRAM market will grow to the size of USD 29.6 billion, increased by 13% from the last year, and mobile DRAM will take 35% share in the DRAM market.

삼성전자(대표 권오현)는 반도체 업계 처음 20나노급 4Gb(기가비트) LPDDR3(Low Power Double Data Rate3) 모바일 D램 양산에 들어갔다고 30일 밝혔다.
이 제품은 2133Mbps 속도로 기존 PC D램과 동일한 수준으로 데이터를 처리할 수 있다. LPDDR3는 종전 LPDDR2보다 2배 이상 속도가 빨라 1초에 풀HD급 영화 3편에 해당하는 17GB 데이터를 처리할 수 있다. 5인치 이상 대화면 스마트폰에서 풀HD급 영상을 실시간으로 지원할 수 있다. 올해 출시되는 프리미엄 스마트폰에 탑재될 것으로 알려졌다.
20나노급 2GB LPDDR3 모바일 D램은 기존 30나노급 LPDDR3보다 속도를 30% 높였고, 소비전력은 20% 줄였다. 두께는 세계 최소형인 0.8㎜를 구현해 얇은 스마트폰 디자인에 적합하다.
삼성전자는 앞으로 20나노급 모바일 D램 생산 비중을 지속적으로 늘려 메모리 사업 경쟁력을 강화할 계획이다.
시장조사업체 가트너는 올해 세계 D램 시장 규모는 전년 대비 13% 성장한 296억 달러로 예상했으며, 이 중 모바일 D램 비중은 35%를 넘어설 것으로 관측했다.
전영현 삼성전자 메모리사업부 부사장은 “글로벌 스마트폰 업체에 조만간 고성능 모바일 솔루션을 제공할 것”이라며 “모바일 D램 성능 개선이 스마트폰 혁신에 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.
