SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung and Intel made investments in the development of voice recognition technology that can serve as an alternative to Apple’s Siri (an intelligent personal assistant that helps users get things done just by asking).
According to CNET and PCWorld, Intel Capital, Samsung Venture Investment and Telefónica Digital have all invested in start-up Expect Labs, whose technology “the Anticipatory Computing Engine (ACE)” is a solution designed to analyze and understand conversations in real-time and proactively find related information. Telefónica Digital is the venture capital arm of Spanish mobile operator Telefónica, the world’s fifth largest carrier. Expect Labs has already developed MindMeld, an application that can analyze a conversation and automatically display related relevant pictures, videos and articles, according to PCWorld.
Intel, Samsung and Telefónica are not the only investors in Expect Labs. Previous investors in the company include Google and IDG Ventures.
Through its partnership with Expect Labs, Samsung expects to get its hands on "new types of intelligent, voice-driven and context aware" applications for smartphones, tablets and smart TVs, PCWorld reported.

삼성•인텔, `시리` 넘어설 음성기술 앱 기술에 투자
삼성과 인텔이 애플 `시리`에 대항할 음성 인식 서비스 기술에 투자한다.
1일 C넷과 PC월드는 삼성 벤처 투자와 인텔 캐피털, 텔레포니카 디지털이 자연어 기반 음성 인식•분석 기술을 가진 스타트업 `익스펙트랩(Expect Labs)`에 투자한다고 보도했다. 텔레포니카 디지털은 세계 5위 모바일 통신사인 스페인 이동통신사 텔레포니카에서 글로벌 벤처 투자를 맡고 있는 사업부문이다.
익스펙트랩은 대화 내용을 실시간으로 이해•분석하고 데이터를 수집한 후 연관된 정보를 미리 찾아주는 자연어 기반 `예측컴퓨팅엔진(ACE)` 기술을 갖고 있다. `마인드멜드`로 알려진 아이패드 앱도 내놨었다. 이 앱은 최대 8명의 대화 내용을 분석하고 관련된 사진•비디오•기사를 자동으로 보여준다. 능동적으로 앞서 내용을 제시한다는 점에서 시리를 넘어서는 앱으로 평가받는다.
익스펙트랩에는 이미 구글 벤처스와 IDG벤처스도 투자했다.
외신들은 삼성과 인텔이 PC와 모바일 기기에 차세대 음성 기술을 접목할 것으로 내다봤다. 테크크런치는 “인텔의 투자는 울트라 북에 음성 제어 기능이 탑재될 것이란 계획의 연장선”이라고 분석했다. 삼성전자도 `S보이스` 기능을 진화시킬 것으로 예상했다.
삼성은 “새로운 지능형 앱과 음성•상황 인식 앱이 스마트폰•스마트패드•스마트TV에 결합될 것”으로 기대했다.
