SEOUL, KOREA – Affected by the continued downward trend in the yen, Korea’s exports have been treading water. Though Korea’s exports stopped short of posting negative growth thanks to exports of mobile phones, semiconductors and LCDs, some point out that inter-ministerial countermeasures are needed.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), exports inched up 0.4% year-on–year to USD 46.3 billion while imports contracted 0.5% to USD 43.7 billion in April of this year. Korea posted a trade surplus of USD 2.6 billion in April, down from last month’s USD 3.3 billion.
Though Korea’s exports managed to grow on a yearly basis for two consecutive months, its growth pace of below 1% - 0.2% in March and 0.4% in April - is disappointing.
By export market, Korea’s exports to Japan have been lethargic due to the wimpish yen. Korea’s exports to Japan, which sank 17.1% in February and 18.2% in March, continued its losing streak, shedding 11.1% year-on-year in April.
Korea’s exports have managed to grow slowly, propped up by growth in exports of three IT items. Exports of wireless communications devices jumped 51.3% with those of semiconductors and LCDs gaining 12.5% and 1.2% respectively.

수출 사실상 정체상태…4월 증가율 0.4%에 그쳐
우리 수출이 엔저 여파를 극복하지 못하고 사실상 제자리걸음에 머물렀다. 휴대폰•반도체•LCD IT 3대 품목이 선전해 마이너스 성장은 피했지만 범 부처 차원 대응책이 필요하다는 지적이다.
산업통상자원부는 4월 수출이 전년 동월 대비 0.4% 증가한 463억달러, 수입은 0.5% 감소한 437억달러를 기록했다고 1일 밝혔다. 무역수지 흑자는 26억달러로 지난달 33억달러에 비해 뒷걸음질쳤다.
수출은 지난 3월에 이어 두 달 연속 전년 대비 증가했지만 소폭 상승에 그쳤다. 3월(0.2%)과 4월(0.4%) 모두 월간 수출 증가율이 1%를 밑돌아 사실상 정체 상태다.
지역별로는 엔저 현상으로 인해 일본으로 수출이 부진하다. 4월 대일본 수출은 전년 대비 11.1% 감소했다. 대일 수출은 2월(-17.1%)과 3월(-18.2%)에도 감소했다.
유일한 버팀목은 지난해 4분기 이후 증가세를 유지해온 IT 3대 품목이다.
무선통신기기 수출이 51.3% 증가한 것을 비롯해 반도체(12.5%), LCD(1.2%) 수출도 늘어났다. 반면에 선박, 철강, 자동차 수출은 줄었다.
산업부는 “세계 경제의 완만한 회복에도 엔저 영향 등으로 우리 수출이 아직 정체상태에 머물러 있는 상황”이라며 “각종 대외여건을 극복하기 위해 범 부처 차원의 적극적인 정책 대응이 필요하다”고 풀이했다.
