LCD TV Shipments Likely to Exceed 100 Million Units by 2009

Demand for LCD TVs will probably reach 102.5 million units by 2009, breaking the 100 million units barrier, a market research firm Displaybank (CEO Peter Kwon) predicts in its latest 'Worldwide Mid-to-long-term TV Market Forecasts' report.
The latest report is an updated version of the conventional global mid-to-longterm TV market reports, and significantly upward adjusts demand for LCD TVs, taking into consideration the prediction that the increased volume in demand for LCD TVs will be 2 million units larger than expected, according to the market research firm. Displaybank also stated that far stronger than expected demand for 40-inch range TVs will have a huge impact on the upward trend in LCD TV demand.
Displaybank stressed that Samsung Electronics' smooth capacity expansions at its seventh-generation (7G) LCD fabrication line and LG.Philips LCD's 7.5G capacity expansions will play a great role in spurring demand for 40-inch range large TVs.
On the other hand, demand for PDPs is also forecast to hit 30 million units by 2010, but there is no upward adjustment for PDP volume compared to the previous one in the new estimate. The large-format television market, 40-inch and larger, will register shipments of 18 million units this year, accounting for nearly 9% of the total, but this figure will surge to 70 million units by 2010, netting a 33% share.
Displaybank added that this growth in the large TV market will become the crucial factor to drive growth in the LCD and PDP panel industry and related component industry.
