Seoul, Korea - Samsung’s Galaxy S4 passed fastidious certification process of the U.S. Department of Defense. With the certification, Samsung now opened a door to the U.S. government market dominated by Blackberry and iPhone.
On the 3rd, the Bloomberg reported that Galaxy S4 by Samsung Electronics, with its security application, Knox, that strengthened the overall security of Google’s Android OS, received a security certificate by the Pentagon and will be introduced to its internal IT network.
The U.S. Department of Defense presented certificates to Samsung Electronics and RIM. Blackberry 10 and Playbook of RIM also received the security certificate. With the security certificate, Samsung Electronics now can reach out many public office and financial institution markets where security is a very sensitive issue.
So far, the Pentagon gave security certificates only to Blackberry smartphones. Samsung is known to have scouted ex-executives of RIM and security experts to get the certificate, and established an organization dedicated to managing government clients in the Western countries.
The Knox OS in certified Samsung product has a multi-layer information protection system and can delete the data stored in smartphone remotely if the phone is lost. Samsung has developed Knox together with 미국국가안전보장국. The Pentagon announced that some of Apple’s products will also receive security certificate.

3일 블룸버그는 구글 안드로이드 보안 강화판 `녹스`를 채택한 삼성전자 갤럭시S4가 미 국방부 보안인증을 받았으며 내부 전산망에 도입된다고 보도했다.
미 국방부는 삼성전자와 블랙베리에 인증을 수여했다. 블랙베리 대상 기기는 `블랙베리10` 스마트폰과 스마트패드 `플레이북`이다. 이번 인증으로 삼성전자는 국방 뿐 아니라 보안이 민감한 공공 및 금융 시장에 폭넓게 진출할 수 있게 됐다.
지금까지 미 국방부는 블랙베리 스마트폰에만 보안 인증을 줬다. 삼성전자는 인증을 얻기 위해 블랙베리 전직 고위 임원과 보안 전문가를 영입하고 서방 정부 기관 업무를 담당하는 조직까지 만든 것으로 전해졌다.
삼성 제품에 들어간 OS 녹스는 다중 정보보호 체계를 갖췄고 기기를 잃어버리면 원격으로 데이터를 삭제하는 기능도 있다. 삼성은 녹스를 미국국가안전보장국과 공동 개발했다. 국방부는 애플 제품에도 보안 인증을 수여할 예정이라고 전했다.
