SEOUL, KOREA - SK Telecom's daily data traffic passed the 1-petabyte (PB) mark. The company announced on May 6 that its daily traffic exceeded 1 petabyte on April 26, first among telecom companies in Korea.
A petabyte is equivalent to 1,068,057 gigabyte. In other words, it is equivalent to a download of 200 million songs or 1.5 million movies on a daily basis. An SK Telecom official said, "Even after April 26 when our daily traffic passed the 1-petabyte mark for the first time, the level of daily traffic remained around that level."
The primary focus of mobile telecommunications operators such as SK Telecom is shifting from voice and text services toward data services.
This is primarily due to the popularization of LTE services and the growing demand for high-quality, high-capacity multimedia. Other factors include the diversification of LTE devices from LTE smartphones toward LTE tablet computers and LTE laptop computers.
