Seoul, Korea -A small-sized Korean company is exporting its energy storage system (ESS) to Japan at a half price. The company was able to reduce the price so much with its technology, and the market is paying attention whether it will be able to produce any visible result in the Japanese market, expected to be as large as KRW 1 trillion a year.
Juha announced on Monday that it will strike a deal with TOPPAN of Japan, the largest printing company in Asia, for the supply of ESS at the end of this month.
Juha is the only small-sized Korean company that sells finished ESS products to Japan, which had already signed an ESS supply contract with Techpal, a Japanese industrial PC company, last January. Juha’s technology was approved to be compliant to Battery Association of Japan standard (SBA S1101:2011), and its product was registered in the list of products subject to Japanese government subsidy (SII).
The trade says Juha’s technology was able to reduce the price of its ESS to a half of what other ESS of the equivalent capacity would cost, and it was the key success factor for TOPPAN to seek for Juha’s supply. While the prices of 3kWh class ESS in the market is formed around JPY 2 million (KRW 22 million), Juha is supplying its ESS with a price tag of JPY 1 million and below. The size of supply contract with TOPPAN is known to be KRW 30 billion per year.
Juha replaced the existing in/output safety device, Automatic Voltage Regulator, with its digital signal processor algorithm technology, and removed some functions, such as fast charging and solar generation interface, in consideration of the specific target market – by replacing a piece of hardware with a software technology, Juha was able to reduce both price and battery consumption, while maintaining the product’s competitiveness. The company was also able to reduce the size of its ESS by one-third with its design technique. Juha’s ESS comes with lithium-ion polymer secondary battery, and its capacity can be expanded to 6kWh by simply adding batteries.
TOPPAN plans to sell Juha’s 3kWh and 6kWh ESSs to elementary school, public office, military and medical markets starting from the second half this year.

국내 한 중소기업이 기술과 가격경쟁력을 앞세워 일본 에너지저장장치(ESS) 시장을 노크한다.
ESS 시장의 핵심요소인 가격을 시중판매가격보다 절반 이상 낮췄다. 연간 1조원 규모가 예상되는 일본 시장에서 가시적 성과를 도출할지 관련 업계 시선이 쏠리고 있다.
주하(대표 김혁•안순용)는 아시아 최대 인쇄업체인 일본 톱판(TOPPAN)과 이달 말 ESS 공급 계약을 체결한다고 6일 밝혔다.
주하는 일본에 ESS 완제품을 수출하는 국내 유일 중소기업으로 지난 1월 일본 산업용PC 업체인 테크팔과도 가정용 ESS 공급계약을 맺은 바 있다. 일본 전지공업회 규격(SBA S1101:2011) 승인을 받고 정부보조금 대상품목(SII)에 등록하면서 기술력을 인정받았다.
톱판과의 공급계약에서 ESS는 같은 용량의 제품 대비 가격을 절반으로 낮춘 독자 기술이 주효했다는 평가다. 현재 시장에서 형성되는 3㎾h급 ESS가 200만엔(2200만원)인데 반해 주하는 100만엔 이하로 공급한다. 연간 공급규모는 약 300억원이다.
회사는 디지털신호처리프로세서(DSP) 알고리즘 기술로 기존의 입출력 안전장치인 자동전압조절장치(AVR)를 대체시켰다. 여기에 특정 타깃 사장을 고려해 급속 충전과 태양광발전 연동 기능을 제외시켰다.
소프트웨어 기술로 하드웨어 부품을 대체해 가격은 물론이고 배터리 소모량까지 줄이면서 경쟁력을 확보한 셈이다. 공간을 최소화한 설계 기술로 크기를 기존 제품에 비해 3분의 1로 줄였다. 배터리는 리튬이온 폴리머 이차전지를 채용했으며 간단한 배터리 추가 증축으로 6㎾h까지 제품 확장이 가능하다.
톱판은 주하의 3•6㎾h급 ESS를 하반기부터 일본 내 초등학교, 관공서, 군, 의료 시장을 대상으로 판매할 방침이다.
안순용 사장은 “이달말 톱판과 최종 공급계약을 체결해 연간 3000대 수출이 예상된다”며 “일본 내수 경기가 좋지 않은데다 고가의 배터리 때문에 수요가 폭발적이지 않은 가운데 일본시장에도 가격 경쟁이 심화되고 있어 이 제품은 큰 호응을 얻을 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
일본 SII에 등록되면 일본 경제산업성 보조금(구매가 30%)과 지자체별 추가 보조금(10∼20%)을 지원받아 최대 50% 가격으로 ESS를 보급할 수 있다. 일본 경제산업성은 리튬이온 이차전지를 채용한 ESS 보조금 지원 예산에 230억엔을 책정했다.
