Smart Grid Based on the Existing Mechanical Watt-Hour Meter

SEOUL, KOREA - It is expected that the existing mechanical watt-hour meters would be able to help realize Smart Grid.

EMT (represented by Jo Hang-hoon) has released an ‘Automatic Meter Reading System for Low-Voltage End Users’, which enables the realization of Smart Grid without changing the old watt-hour meters to the electronic ones.

The method is simple. Only a pulse sensor needs to be attached to each and every mechanical watt-hour meter at a household.

A pulse sensor detects the electric current and sends the relevant data to the automatic meter reading infrastructure (AMI). The unit price of it is just KRW 3,000.

The pulse sensor method has some good points. The existing mechanical meters, which can endure various noises and the instantaneous transient input voltage unlike the electronic meters, don’t need to be changed. When attaching a display, they can show data as the electronic meters do. It also enables the calculation of the hourly wattage and the maximum load.

The company says that its system could save some KRW 2.6 trillion as it doesn’t require any changes of the current mechanical watt-hour meters.

Meanwhile, EMT has just finished their tests on 160 households in a local city.

EMT(대표조행훈)는전자식전력량계로바꾸지않아도스마트그리드를구현할수있는 `저압수용가원격검침시스템`을선보였다.

방법은간단하다. 집집마다달려있는기계식전력량계에펄스센서만부착하면된다.

펄스센서에서디지털화된정보를수집, 분석해원격검침하는방식이다. 펄스센서는전류를감지해원격검침인프라(AMI)에전송하는역할을한다. 가격도개당 3000원수준에불과하다.

전자식전력량계와달리각종노이즈, 순간적과전압에강한기계식전력량계를그대로쓸수있다. 디스플레이장치만달면전자식전력량계처럼다양한정보도표시가능하다. 시간대별계량은물론이고최대부하도산정할수있다.

전력량계를굳이교체하지않아도돼비용이크게줄어든다. 전자식전력량계교체비용과비교해절반수준이다. 전국 1300만호를전자식전량계로교체할때에비해약 2조6000억원을절감할수있다는게회사측설명이다. 기계식전력량계가한전소유가아니라교체수요가적은아파트에만적용해도 1조3000억원을절약할수있다는것이다.

EMT는현재경기도안산에있는휴먼빌아파트 160가구에이시스템을적용, 테스트를마쳤다.

한주현 EMT 연구소장은 “스마트그리드는전력량계를바꾸는게핵심이아니라전력량계에서오는데이터를정보로바꿔제공하는시스템이관건”이라며 “전자식전력량계로교체하고있는우리나라보다해외를초점으로개발했다”고말했다.
