SEOUL, KOREA - The number of new import car registrations in Korea hit a record-high level in April 2013, thanks to aggressive marketing by each brand and the effect of the Seoul Motor Show.
According to the Korea Automobile Importer and Distributor Association (KAIDA), the sales of import cars reached 13,320 units in April, up 24.9 percent from a year ago.
Import car sales renewed a record high in five months. The previous record was set in November 2012 when import car sales reached 12,470 units.
The April figure is also up 10.4 percent compared to a month ago. During the January-April period of this year, import car sales totaled 48,284 units, up 20.9 percent year on year.
In contrast to the sales of domestically produced cars that remain sluggish, the sales of import cars continue upward trend.
By brand, there was no change in ranks. The sales of top-three brands remained strong, each selling more than 2,000 units in April. BMW came on top with 2,719, followed by Mercedes Benz with 2,324, and Volkswagen with 2,206.
