SEOUL, KOREA - SmartDigital (represented by Jeong Seok-soon), a local manufacturer of LED light diffuser plates, has recently localized the white glass tube used for light diffusion. With price and quality competitiveness, the local company is now aiming at local and overseas markets currently dominated Japanese companies.
The newly-localized glass tube is produced directly from a glass melting furnace. The company could drastically save the cost thanks to its own manufacturing method patented home and abroad.
As the glass tube is well received in the American and Japanese markets, the company is expecting to mass-produce it sometime early next year.
The local market is also positively responding to the product not only because it is 20% cheaper than a plastic diffuser plate but also because it has good quality.
“Even if the market has been led by Japanese companies, we are quite confident in competing with them as we have developed our own technology of producing a good-quality glass tube at an affordable price. As an increasing demand is expected from many of the local and foreign companies, we could start producing it en masse ahead of the schedule,” says Mr. Jeong, the representative of SmartDigital.
스마트디지탈, LED 조명용 백색 유리관 국산화… 시장 공략 나선다
발광다이오드(LED) 조명 확산판 전문업체 스마트디지탈이 광 확산용 백색 유리관(Glass Tube) 국산화에 성공했다. 일본이 주도하는 시장에 도전장을 내민 것이다. 가격과 품질 경쟁력을 앞세워 국내외 시장을 공략한다는 목표다.
8일 업계에 따르면 최근 스마트디지탈(대표 정석순)은 세계 처음 유리 원료를 특수 배합해 용해로에서 바로 용융과 성형 과정을 거치는 LED 조명 확산용 백색 유리관을 개발했다. 변색 없이 빛 투과율이 높고 가격도 기존 제품보다 저렴하다.
LED 조명 확산용 백색 유리관은 일본 파나소닉사가 시장에서 앞서 있다. 직관형 LED 조명 확산판에 백색 코팅을 처리한 확산용 백색 유리관을 사용해 경쟁사보다 비싼 가격에 고급형 제품으로 자리매김했다.
스마트디지탈이 개발한 LED 조명 확산용 백색 유리관은 용해로에서 바로 용융해 생산한다. 국내외 특허를 출원한 자체 제조 기법으로 원가를 대폭 절감했다.
회사는 제품 개발 이후 시장 반응이 빨라 제품 양산 시기가 앞당겨 질 것으로 보고 있다. 특히 LED 조명 확산용 유리관 수요가 늘고 있는 미국, 일본 등 선진 시장에서 러브콜이 늘고 있다. 용해로 한 개당 최소 제품 수요를 확보할 것으로 예상되는 내년 초에 양산을 시작할 계획이다.
국내 시장에서도 주목을 끌고 있다. 국내에서 주로 사용하는 플라스틱 확산판보다 20%가량 저렴한 가격에 성능도 좋아 업계 관심이 높아지고 있다.
플라스틱 확산판은 LED 소자 수명에 반해 5년 이상 사용 시 누렇게 색이 변하는 황변 현상으로 빛 투과율이 저하되는 문제점이 있었다. 또 고·저온의 특수 사용환경에서 형태가 변해 사용이 어려웠다. 이런 이유로 국내 연구기관을 중심으로 LED 조명 플라스틱 확산판을 유리관으로 전환해야 한다는 주장이 제기되고 있는 상황이다.
정석순 스마트디지탈 대표는 “일본이 주도하고 있던 시장이지만 좋은 성능의 제품을 보다 저렴하게 만들 수 있는 자체 기술력을 갖춰 시장 경쟁에 자신있다”며 “초반부터 국내외 업체의 관심이 많아 기존 계획보다 양산 시기가 앞당겨 질 수도 있다”고 말했다.
세계 LED 조명 확산판 시장 수요는 올해 약 4억개 규모로 추정된다. 연간 20% 이상 성장해 2017년에는 10억개 규모가 될 전망이다.
