The following are experts from an interview with D.P. Kothari, expresident of India Institute of Technology . --Ed. Q: What do you think is the most essential element for qualified IT professionals A: They're always sincere, honest, hardworking. They know their job as well, if not better, than anybody else. This is what is their essential element. And since they are not from the west, they want to make Asia also. And this is called, it is an Asian century. So Asia will be in the forefront in this century. And the reason will be IT professionals in Asia. Well 200 universities, 1400 engineering colleges, and we are called technologist, best technology and scientific manpower in the world. And our best bet is export of professionals. Everywhere - name a country - you will find an Indian IT professional working there, including South Korea. Only yesterday one professional joined this inner city, Uni city area. He's from Bombay. So you'll find the education system in India is as good as the best in US. Especially the IITs, they are the band men that are known all over the world. And even when I was the director at IIT Delhi in 2005 all the 7 directors of 7 IITs were taken to Capital Hill in USA and were given standing ovations for the contributions of IIT professionals to the US economy. They have declared in fact an IIT day, IIT week and IIT month in various states of the US. And we have 30,000 IIT Delhi alumni throughout the world who are serving as the flag-bearers, ambassadors of India. And they are taking it there to being best by 2020. Q: How has the hiring style of IT companies in acquiring IT professionals changing compared to before A: Well the IT professionals are important wherever they are, from wherever they are holding their degrees. The only thing is their salaries has gone up. Their demand has gone up as India has become the IT capital of the world, IT hub. Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Noida, Junagadh, all these places are called IT hubs. And well the style of hiring is the same, they go for the best, anywhere in the world. So you want to purchase anything, you'll get the best brand with minimum salaries. Since this is an Asian country, and we are not as rich as others, so even with less salary you can get them. Like an Indian professor was appointed US$70,000 per annum salary. Perhaps if it had been MIT or the US it would have got US$100,000. So they're cheap, they're good, they're better, hardworking, sincere, honest, as I said. Q: Please tell me your image of ICU. What's your impression about this forum A: I have found the ICU excellent, also this university's president excellent. She was recently given an award by an Indian organization in Bombay. I was to attend that, unfortunately I could not attend, I was not well. I've found it a unique institution. Not many places in the world you have a Uni city like ICU. And I'm sure it will go places, it will be one day recognized as your president says, by 2012, as the best in the world, by 2007 the best in Asia. Q: Can I get your advice regarding the way to improve Korea's IT industry and educational environment, and to cultivate talented global IT leaders What kind of efforts are required, especially in Asian countries such as Japan or Korea A: The improvement never stops. Whether its individual, whether its an institution, whether it is an industry, whether it is a country. The improvement goes on until the last bit of one's life. So IT industry in Korea has done a tremendous progress. There's always hope, you know, to do more, to do better. I am sure the IT industry in Korea will also do that. You will come up equal to the very best in the world, including India, the US, or Europe, whatever. I think you are doing the job, ICU is doing their job creating IT manpower, which is a very important resource. Who hired remain in Korea, work for Korea, serve Korea. Don't lose them. Give them good salary, good treatment. So that they'll be here and bring Korea industry to the top.
