SEOUL, KOREA – Japan's Sharp Corp has raised the personnel reshuffle card in a bid to break out of the current stalemate. The Nihon Geizai Shimbun reported on Monday that Sharp Chairman Mikio Katayama and President Takashi Okuda will resign and Executive Vice President Kozo Takahashi will be promoted to president, replacing Takashi Okuda. Such a dramatic personnel reshuffle came a year after Mikio Katayama and Takashi Okuda were promoted to Sharp chairman and president respectively in April of last year.
Incoming President Kozo Takahashi started with Sharp in 1980 and has ample experiences with sales of white goods under his belt. He also served as the head of Sharp’s US headquarters. He rose to the position of vice president in 2012.
Sharp posted a deficit of 500 billion yen due to its unsuccessful investment in LCDs. Sharp has recently received financial assistance from Samsung Electronics. Yet, Sharp is still in dire straits.
Sharp Chairman Mikio Katayama will take charge of investment negotiations with Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics even after he resigns from the post.

'사면초가' 日 샤프, 결국 대표이사 전격 교체
사면초가에 빠진 일본 샤프가 대표이사 교체 카드를 꺼냈다.
니혼게이자이는 샤프가 가타야마 미키오 회장과 오쿠다 다카시 사장이 함께 물러나고 다카하시 고조 부사장을 대표이사에 선임하는 인사를 단행했다고 13일 보도했다. 지난해 4월 가타야마 사장을 회장으로, 오쿠다 상무를 사장으로 올리는 경영진을 구성했지만 1년여 만에 대폭 교체를 선택했다.
신임 다카하시 사장은 1980년 샤프에 입사, 복사기와 백색가전 사업으로 잔뼈가 굵은 영업통이다. 미주 본부장을 역임해 해외 경험도 풍부하다. 2008년에 임원으로 발탁됐고 2012년에 부사장에 올랐다.
샤프는 LCD 사업 투자 실패 탓에 지난해 5000억엔(약 5조4667억원)에 이르는 대규모 적자를 냈다. 대만 홍하이와 자본 제휴로 위기를 벗어나려 했지만 교섭에 난항을 겪었다. 최근 삼성전자의 자금 지원을 받는 등 위태로운 하루하루를 보내고 있다.
가타야마 회장은 대표이사에서 물러난 뒤에도 퀄컴이나 삼성전자와의 투자 협의를 담당했다. 유임 목소리도 적지 않았지만 LCD 투자 실패의 책임을 지는 방향으로 정리됐다. 오쿠다 사장도 공동 책임을 졌다는 분석이 지배적이다.
