SEOUL, KOREA - World-renowned companies are going to work together to develop a new Wi-Fi technology that is ten times as fast as the current one. Therefore, the next generation Wi-Fi that the government and local telecommunications companies are developing should be compatible with the one global companies are planning to develop, otherwise it would be no use to anyone.
The Nikkei reported on May 13 that some 20 global companies including Samsung Electronics, NTT, Qualcomm, Ericson and China Mobile agreed to jointly develop a new Wi-Fi technology. As each of the companies is the best in its own sector, the new Wi-Fi technology is possibly adopted as the international standard.
The aimed speed is 10GB which is ten times faster than the current Wi-Fi. At the speed of 10GB, it takes just one second to send data amounting to the volume of newspapers for 1,200 days. And Full HD real-time streaming service would be also possible thanks to the new technology.
Behind such a move of major global companies lies the exponential increase in the mobile Internet traffic. As it is impossible to handle the ever increasing traffic by using only the existing mobile communication network, they believe it would be the best to boost the speed of Wi-Fi to share the burden.
As for Korea, ETRI is leading the development of a new high-speed Wi-Fi. And KT is also trying to develop 7GB Wi-Fi technology. But many are voicing their concerns, saying that if Korea’s next generation Wi-Fi technology is different from the international norm, the new technology would die out in the market.
지금보다 10배 빠른 와이파이 나온다
내로라하는 세계적 기업이 힘을 합쳐 지금보다 10배 빠른 와이파이 기술을 만든다. 이 기술과 호환되지 않으면 우리 정부와 통신 업계가 개발하는 차세대 와이파이는 외딴 섬이 될 가능성도 배제할 수 없다.
니혼게이자이는 20여개 기업이 속도를 획기적으로 높인 와이파이 기술 개발에 합의했다고 13일 보도했다.
주요 기업은 우리나라 삼성전자를 비롯해 일본 NTT, 미국 퀄컴, 스웨덴 에릭슨, 중국 차이나모바일 등이다. 니혼게이자이에 따르면 NTT는 대용량 무선 안테나 기술을, 퀄컴은 무선 제어 반도체를 맡는다. 각 사업 분야에서 세계 최고 수준을 자랑하는 선도 기업이기 때문에 여기서 만든 차세대 와이파이 기술이 국제 표준으로 될 가능성이 높다. 이달 중에 표준 규격 틀을 만드는 작업에 착수할 방침이다. 3년 후 정식 서비스가 목표다.
목표 속도는 10기가비트다. 현재 가장 빠른 와이파이 서비스가 1기가비트 정도라는 사실을 감안하면 10배 이상 빠른 속도다. 유선 인터넷 최고 속도에 버금간다. 신문 1200일 분량을 1초에 보낼 수 있고, 풀HD 영상의 실시간 스트리밍 서비스가 가능한 수준이다.
주요 기업이 차세대 와이파이 기술 개발에 손을 잡은 이유는 모바일 인터넷 트래픽이 기하급수적으로 증가하기 때문이다. 오는 2017년이면 월간 세계 무선 인터넷 트래픽은 1100경바이트에 이를 전망이다. 현재의 10배에 달하는 수치다. 하루가 다르게 늘어나는 트래픽을 이동통신망으로만 해결하기는 불가능하므로 와이파이 속도를 높여 보완한다는 판단이다. 와이파이는 이동통신 네트워크보다 이용 거리가 짧지만 설치 비용이 10분의 1에 불과하다.
우리나라도 한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)을 중심으로 10기가비트 속도의 와이파이 기술을 개발 중이다. KT도 400메가비트 와이파이 상용 서비스 성공을 발판으로 7기가비트 속도에 도전한다고 밝혔다. 일각에서는 우리나라 차세대 와이파이 기술이 업계 표준과 다르면 와이브로와 같은 운명을 걸을 수 있다고 지적했다.
