SEOUL, KOREA - It has been reported that LG Electronics is the only company among the top five global mobile phone makers that posted a quarterly growth in the world mobile phone market in the first quarter.
According to Strategy Analytics (SA), a US-based market research firm, on May 14, the local home appliances maker sold 16.2 million mobile phones in the first quarter, up 800,000 units from the fourth quarter of last year when the number stood at 15.4 million. Out of top five mobile phone makers, the local company was the only one that posted a quarterly growth in sales for that period.
On the strength of the sales increase, LG took the mobile phone market share of 4.3%, ranking the 4th, up one notch from the previous quarter.
SA has also said that LG sold 10.3 million Smartphone terminals in the first quarter, ranking the 3rd with the market share of 4.9%. In terms of the quarterly Smartphone sales, the company reached a record high in the first quarter, doubling the sales made in the same quarter of last year.
Meanwhile, three out of four Smartphone terminals sold in the first quarter were Android phones. For the period, 160.9 million Android Smartphone terminals were sold, taking the market share of 75.2%, while iOS-based iPhone logged 37.4 million units in sales, taking the market share of 17.5% only.

LG전자가 지난 1분기 세계 휴대폰 시장에서 상위 5개 제조사 중 유일하게 전 분기 대비 성장한 것으로 나타났다.
14일 미국 시장조사기관 스트래티지애널리틱스(SA)에 따르면 LG전자는 1분기 1620만대의 휴대폰을 판매해 지난해 4분기 1540만대 대비 80만대를 더 판매했다. 세계 휴대폰 판매 상위 5개 제조사 중 판매량이 증가한 곳은 LG전자가 유일하다.
판매량 증가에 힘입어 LG전자는 휴대폰 점유율 4.3%로 4위를 차지해 전분기보다 한계단 상승했다.
앞서 발표한 SA자료에 따르면 LG전자는 1분기 글로벌 스마트폰 시장에서 1030만대를 판매해 점유율 4.9%로 세계 3위에 올랐다. 분기 스마트폰 판매량은 역대 최대로, 전년 동기 490만대보다 2배 이상 증가했다.
LG전자 관계자는 “글로벌 휴대폰 시장서 거둔 성장은 양과 질 두 마리 토끼를 모두 잡은 것”이라며 “이후에도 디스플레이, 감성 UX, 디자인, LTE 기술력 등 LG전자만의 4대 차별화 경쟁력을 지속적으로 강화해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
한편 SA에 따르면 1분기 판매된 스마트폰 4대 중 3대는 안드로이드폰인 것으로 나타났다.
1분기 운용체계(OS)별 스마트폰 판매량(공급 기준) 집계 결과 안드로이드 스마트폰이 1억6090만대 팔려 시장점유율 75.2%를 기록했다. 판매 대수와 시장점유율 모두 역대 최고 기록이다. iOS를 사용하는 애플 아이폰 판매량은 3740만대로 시장점유율 17.5%에 불과했다.
전년 동기 대비 성장률은 안드로이드 스마트폰이 77.3%였고 아이폰은 6.6%에 그쳤다. 아이폰 성장률이 한 자릿수를 기록한 것은 이번이 처음이다.
