SEOUL, KOREA – According to US market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA)’s 2002-2017 Outlook on Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments, South Korea is estimated to rank 79th among the surveyed 88 nations with 2.43 mobile phones per household in 2017.
South Korea finishing 79th sounds somewhat surprising given Korea’s highest mobile phone penetration rate. Besides, 2.43 mobile phones per household are even lower than the average 3.28 units per household. Croatia finished last with 1.88 mobile phones per household.
The reason why South Korea ranked low is because of the total number of households and the number of members per household. Rapid growth in the number of nuclear families and a rise in the number of one-person households seem to have pushed down Korea’s ranking.
Iraq was placed first with 7.52 mobile phones per household, followed by Saudi Arabia. Both countries have maintained an extended family system.
The US and Canada ranked below South Korea, probably because of growth in the number of one-person households and nuclear families.

미국 시장조사기관 스트래티지애널리틱스(SA)가 내놓은 `세계 휴대폰 출하량 전망 2002~2017년` 자료에서 우리나라는 2017년 가구당 2.43대의 휴대폰을 보유해 88개국 중 79위를 기록할 것으로 전망됐다.
우리나라가 휴대폰 보급률이 세계 최고 수준임을 감안하면 의외의 순위다. 세계 평균 3.28대보다 적은 것도 눈에 띈다. 크로아티아가 가구당 1.88대로 가장 순위가 낮았고, 슬로바키아가 1.96대로 그 다음을 기록했다.
한국 순위가 낮은 것은 가구 수와 가구당 가족 수에 따른 결과로 해석된다. 핵가족화 가속화와 1인 가구 증가 등이 전체적인 통계를 낮춘 것으로 분석된다.
상위권을 차지한 나라의 면면을 보면 가족 구성이 미친 영향을 알 수 있다. 가구당 7.52대 보유로 1위를 차지한 이라크와 7.22대로 2위에 오른 사우디아라비아는 모두 대가족 제도를 유지하는 나라들이다. 알제리, 말레이시아, 베트남 등 5위권 나라들도 마찬가지다.
반대로 한국보다 순위가 낮은 나라에 미국과 캐나다가 포함된 것도 한국과 마찬가지로 1인 가구 증가와 핵가족화 때문으로 풀이된다.
