SEOUL, KOREA – TOK Advanced Materials is a joint venture between Japan’s TOK and Samsung C&T Corporation. At the end of last year, Japan’s TOK and Samsung C&T Corporation decided to build a research center and production facilities dedicated to cutting-edge materials for semiconductors and LCDs on a 28,308㎡ area inside the High-Tech Industrial Cluster in Songdo, Incheon. The research center and production facilities will be opened in the second half of this year. An investment of USD 150 million was made up front and additional facility investments are in the pipeline.
Iwasaki Koubun, President of TOK Advanced Materials said, “This is an unprecedented large-scale investment compared to TOK’s average annual investment of 3 billion yen. Our goal is to supply our products to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.”
Japan’s TOK unprecedentedly decided to put up a research center in South Korea in order to expedite its responses to the S. Korean semiconductor industry. Trial production will kick off in July and TOK Advanced Materials will begin the mass-production of products in November.

[글로벌 소재기업을 가다]TOK공업, 이제는 한국 반도체•디스플레이 지원군
TOK첨단재료는 일본 TOK공업과 삼성물산의 합작법인이다. 지난 연말 인천 송도 첨단산업클러스터 내 2만8308㎡ 부지에 차세대 반도체•LCD 생산용 첨단재료 연구소와 생산시설을 건립하기로 했다. 올해 하반기 가동할 예정이다. 1억5000만달러(약 1677억원)를 우선 투자하기로 했고 향후 설비 등에 추가 투자도 예정돼 있다.
고분 이와사키 본사 영업본부장 겸 한국TOK첨단재료 사장은 “TOK공업은 매년 30억엔(약 327억원)가량 투자를 해왔는데 전례없는 대단위 투자를 하는 셈”이라며 “신공장 제품을 삼성전자•SK하이닉스에 공급하는 게 가장 중요한 목표”라고 말했다.
한국 반도체 업계 대응력을 높이기 위해 직접 현지 연구개발(R&D)을 하기로 했다. 지금까지 일본 사가미센터에 R&D가 집중돼 있었던 것에 비춰보면 이례적인 결정이다. 같은 포토레지스트라도 고객마다 최적의 조합이 다르다. 국내 반도체업체에는 실험기간과 주문일정이 속전속결이어야 한다. 그는 “한국은 샘플 피드백이 왔을 때 1주일 안에 다음 샘플을 보내줘야 한다”며 국내 연구소를 설립하게 된 배경을 설명했다.
일본 반도체•디스플레이산업의 기반이 된 TOK공업이 이제는 한국 첨단산업의 지원군으로 나선다는 각오다. 송도공장에서 생산된 제품은 7월 시생산을 시작하고 11월 양산에 돌입한다.
이와사키 본부장은 “세계 1•2위를 다투는 한국 반도체•디스플레이기업이 더욱 성장할 것이라는 확신이 있다”며 “현지 제조•R&D를 기반으로 든든한 협력사로 자리매김할 것”이라고 말했다.
