SEOUL, KOREA - GnC Energy is going to advance into a foreign biogas power plant project.
The local energy company announced on May 19 that it recently won a contract from a Belarus-based company that runs state-owned livestock farms to build a biogas power plant. The plant with the capacity of 2㎿ will be fueled by biogas produced from livestock night soil by using a microorganism-based anaerobic digester. The daily outpouring of livestock excreta that was once used as fertilizer will be changed into biogas to generate electricity for sales. The company is expecting the annual profit from selling the electricity would be over KRW 2 billion.
For this project, GnC Energy is planning to establish a joint venture with the Belarusian company at the capital investment ratio of eight to two.
It was the Eastern European nation’s policy to support new renewable energy that attracted the attention of the local company. As the country has a number of large-sized livestock farms nationwide, GnC Energy says it would be all possible to expand the business after making the initial project successful.
“GnC Energy can make profits from the sales of electricity while the farms are able to utilize liquid fertilizer produced from the anaerobic digester. We’ve built up know-how on constructing and operating biogas plants for four years. And we believe the chance of success is quite high,” says a person from the company.

지엔씨에너지는 최근 벨라루스 국영 축산농장을 운영하는 자리야IK로부터 바이오가스발전소를 수주했다고 19일 밝혔다. 이 발전소는 2㎿ 규모로, 농장에서 사육하는 가축의 분뇨를 미생물을 활용한 혐기성 소화조로 바이오가스를 생산해 연료로 사용한다. 연일 쏟아져 나오는 가축 분뇨를 단순 비료로 사용하던 것을 바이오가스로 전환, 전기 판매 수익도 올린다. 연간 전기판매 수익만 20억원을 웃돌 것으로 회사 측은 기대하고 있다.
지엔씨에너지는 이를 위해 자리야IK와 함께 자본금 8 대 2의 비율로 합작법인을 설립, 연말 착공할 예정이다.
지엔씨에너지가 벨라루스를 선택한 것은 벨라루스의 신재생에너지 지원 정책 때문이다. 전력 구입액이 ㎾당 200원에 달한다. 최근 국내 기업 진출이 활발한 베트남에 비해 구입액이 세 배 이상 차이가 난다. 인건비는 우리나라에 비해 10분의 1에 불과해 자금조달비용을 감안해도 수익률이 10%가 넘는다. 벨라루스 내에만 3305만7800여㎡(1000만평) 이상 가축 농장이 수십 곳에 달해 이번 사업만 성공하면 얼마든지 사업 확장이 가능하다는 게 회사 측 설명이다.
회사 관계자는 “지엔씨에너지에서는 전기 판매수익을 가져가고 농장에서는 혐기성 소화조에서 생산되는 액체비료를 활용해 가축 사료를 재배하는 데 활용할 수 있다”며 “지엔씨에너지는 4년 전부터 수도권매립지에 바이오가스발전소를 건설해 운영한 노하우를 갖고 있어 성공 가능성이 높다”고 말했다.
