Linksys Ships 25 Million Wireless Routers
Linksys announced it has shipped more than 25 million wireless routers since the company launched its first wireless router in January 2001. When Linksys first started shipping wireless routers, it shipped about 100,000 each month. Today the company ships nearly one million wireless routers worldwide on a monthly basis including Wireless-B, Wireless-G, Wireless A+G and Wireless-N Routers.
Linksys is currently the worldwide leader in SOHO shipments of wireless routers, according to the Dell Oro Group, an industry research company. Dell Oro reports there have been 48 million wireless routers shipped worldwide, and there are currently more than 78 million homes equipped with a wireless network. "Our wireless routers provide the platform of home networking which enable applications beyond sharing internet connections," said Michael Pocock, Linksys senior vice president and general manager.
"The transition from Wireless-B to G to N has also enabled the ability for us to provide a rich multimedia experience for users to share photos, music, video, make phone calls, and move personal and professional content around the home to any connected device through a wireless connection."
Wireless technology is the most ubiquitous networking technology in the home today with widespread use in PCs, cameras, gaming adapters, media players, DVD players, music players and more. In less than 5 years, three 802.11 wireless standard technologies have hit the market -- each one has been able to increase specified data rates from 11Mbps to 270 Mbps.
The wireless industry has also enhanced the technology with more robust security introducing Wireless Protected Access (WPA). But what is most evident is how Linksys has helped improve the user set up and experience of their wireless routers.
Linksys started the setup process of a wireless router with a simple web-browser based user install method of configuring the router and then moved to provide an install CD that walked the customer through set up and configuration. Linksys built on the success of the install method and CD and introduced Secure Easy Setup that helped configure the router security and installation through a push of a button on the router. Recently Linksys has improved the user experience further by developing a software application called Linksys Easy Link Advisor (LELA) that resides on select Linksys networking products to aid in the self discovery and setup of Linksys wireless devices on a home network.
Linksys has invested in the continuous improvement of the user experience with the goal of making it easier, fun and intuitive.
