SEOUL, KOREA - Amid the protracted downturn in the shipbuilding business, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. is doing very well, already attaining more than 50 percent of this year's order volume target. According to the company on May 23, its president Choi Won-gil succeeded in winning 10 new ship orders worth US$300 million from a week's trip to Europe until the 21st.
The ship orders included seven petroleum carriers and three merchant ships. In particular, Mr. Choi signed on May 15 with Italy's d'Amico Societa di Navigazione SpA to build two 50,000-ton petrol carriers.
For this year to date, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has won a total of 64 vessel orders worth $2.1 billion, achieving 65 percent of the annual target of $3.2 billion.
