Embedded software industry for mobile devices On November 23, the fourth 2006 Daegu International Embedded Conference (DEC 2006) was held at the Daegu EXCO under the subject of Innovative Embedded. Twelve embedded experts at home and abroad have attended this conference. Park Kwang-jin, president of the Center for Digital Industry Promotion (DIP) of Daegu who hosted the DEC 2006, said: 'We hope that DEC 2006 will provide not only domestic embedded companies with a next generation technology trend but also a good opportunity to create meaningful businesses between related companies. Furthermore, we believe that this event will make contribution to the promotion of embedded industry and the analysis of latest technology trend, so that it will be of help in securing international competitiveness of this industry.' The embedded software, which is one of the 9 new growth engines in the IT 839 policy, has become a core technology in raising industrial competitiveness. Owing to the convergence technology, it has become an essential part in creating added value not only for an information technology but also a traditional industry. Geographically, Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province is well mixed with both state of the art industries such as the mobile industry and display industry and traditional industries such as automobiles and machining. In this respect, this area can be an optimal place to create a blue ocean market through embedded software. At present, Gumi Industrial Park is the hub of mobile industry, Daegu is the center of medical devices industry, and Pohang is well established with infrastructure for intelligent robots. The main event of this program was held in the conference hall of Daegu EXCO, along with auxiliary events such as the business consultation meeting, business reception and embedded industry exhibition DEX 2006. The conference had two sessions, a morning session and afternoon session. The morning session started with Kim Young-gyun, senior managing director of Samsung Electronics. He gave a lecture on 'Operating systems of next generation mobile terminal and development strategy.' He was followed by Oh Jae-ha, managing director of Qualcomm, who gave a lecture on the subject of 'Qualcomm's strategy in the mobile communication and FLO (Forward Link Only).' Finally the software project team of the Ministry of Information and Communication presented 'Embedded software promotion strategy.' The afternoon session consisted of two tracks: the A track dealt with 'Embedded strategic marketing and business direction,' and the B track with 'Embedded innovation for the next generation.' In particular, this conference has enabled visitors to overview at one place the next generation embedded platform and standards and the market trends of major enterprises at home and abroad.
