SEOUL, KOREA - ‘Tape storage’, considered to be old fashioned, is back in the spotlight, as there is an increasing demand for backup storage media that could protect data from unexpected incidents including natural disasters and hacking.
“Tape storage, whose sales have been so far much shrunken by its disk-based rivals, is becoming a new trend in the local storage market as it is recently seen as a suitable medium for distributed archiving of data,” says Kim Hyung-seok, a manager of the storage business division of IBM Korea.
What he has said is proven by business showings of related companies. According to the industry, the sales of tape storage of IBM Korea started to be on the rise from the last quarter of last year and are expected to increase by 50% in the second quarter compared with the same period of the previous year.
Quantum Korea, the largest tape storage vendor in Korea, is posting a sound growth in sales, up 10% from the year before.
The performance of tape was once assessed to be lower than that of disks. But it is thriving again. The recent popularity is somewhat related to the economic conditions and a series of cyber attacks on some of the financial institutions.
“As data was compromised by recent cyber terror activities in 2011 and on March 20 this year, those concerned seem to be looking for the method of storing and keeping data affordably and safely,” says a source from the industry.
The merits of tape are its cheap price and longevity. As for the same storage capacity, tape makes it possible with only 20~25% of the price of a SATA disk. It also has a lifespan of 15~30 years.
테이프 백업 `죽지 않아`…수요 되살아난다
구식 저장매체라는 인식이 강했던 `테이프 스토리지`가 재조명을 받고 있다. 자연재해나 해킹 등 예상치 못한 사고로부터 데이터를 안전하게 보호하려는 백업 수요가 늘어서다.
27일 업계에 따르면 테이프 스토리지 시장이 다시 살아나고 있단 평이다.
김형석 한국IBM 스토리지 담당사업 부장은 “그동안 디스크에 위축된 테이프 스토리지가 최근 데이터 소산(분산 보관) 용도로 주목 받으면서 국내 스토리지 시장에 새로운 트렌드가 되고 있다”고 전했다.
이는 기업들의 실적에서도 드러나고 있다. 업계 따르면 한국IBM의 테이프 스토리지 매출은 작년 4분기부터 증가세로 전환한 데 이어 올 2분기에는 전년 대비 50% 성장을 달성할 것으로 알려졌다.
국내 최대 테이프 스토리지 공급 업체인 퀀텀코리아도 실적에 호조를 보여, 전년 대비 10% 성장을 기록 중이다. 퀀텀은 금융권과 대기업은 물론이고 중소기업에서도 수요가 증가하는 특징을 보였다고 설명했다.
테이프는 디스크에 비해 성능이 떨어진다는 평가를 받았다. 이에 디스크에 수요를 잠식당해왔다. 시장 조사 업체인 IDC에 따르면 세계 테이프 성장률은 2011년 2.7%, 2012년 2.6%, 2013년 2.3% 등으로 매년 하락세에 있다. 국내 추세도 다르지 않았다.
테이프가 국내 시장에서 다시 주목을 받는 것은 최근의 경제 상황과 잇따른 대형 사고와 무관치 않다.
업계 관계자는 “2011년 농협 전산망 마비 사태에 이어 지난 3·20 사이버테러 등으로 데이터에 피해를 입으면서 보다 저렴하고 안전하게 보관하는 방법에 관심을 보이는 것 같다”고 전했다.
테이프의 장점은 비용과 장기 보관에 있다. 동일한 용량을 구축할 때 SATA 디스크 활용 가격을 비교하면 테이프 스토리지는 디스크 대비 20~25% 비용으로 구축 가능하다. 에너지 사용 비용도 적고 보관 수명도 15년부터 최장 30년까지로 긴 수명을 자랑한다.
퀀텀코리아 관계자는 “1차 백업을 디스크로 하더라도 테이프를 통해 2차로 데이터를 보호하는 경우가 많다”며 “테이프 백업 시스템은 디스크와 함께 공존하게 될 것”이라고 전했다.
