SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Heavy Industries said on May 30 it won a US$750 million order to build a semi-submersible drilling rig for Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. of the United States. The dimension of the rig, 123 meters in length and 96 meters in width, is identical to that currently being built for Fred Olsen Energy, a Norwegian ship owner. The rig is capable of being operable under the depth of 3,000 meters.
The company, to be responsible for the whole process from design to pilot operation, said that the rig is scheduled to be delivered by November 2015 and due to be installed in Great Australia Bight, an offshore region south of Australia, for BP. For this year to date, Hyundai Heavy has won five submersible drilling rigs worth $6 billion.
A company official said, "As underwater drilling and production equipment requires a high level of quality and reliability, we are doing our utmost to improve safety features of our equipment."
