SEOUL, KOREA – Fighting against the weak yen offensive, exports of IT (information technology) helped South Korea post a trade surplus in May.
However, continued sluggishness in Korea’s other flagship industries such as shipbuilding and steel casts a cloud over Korea’s trade outlook.
According to Export and Import Trend in May, issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), Korea’s exports gained 3.2% y-o-y to USD 48.37 billion in May while imports contracted 4.8% to USD 42.34 billion during the same period.
Accordingly, South Korea posted a trade surplus of USD 6.03 billion (the largest since 2010), marking the 16th consecutive month of staying in the black in May of this year.
Despite growing fears over the weak yen offensive, South Korea has been holding up well. Korea’s exports edged up 1.0% y-o-y to over USD 230 billion in the January-May period while imports shed 2.8% during the same period.
Korea’s weapon against the strong yen was the Korea IT industry’s upswing. In the January-May period, exports of wireless communications devices including smartphones surged 36.4% y-o-y. Exports of semiconductors and LCDs rose 9.0% and 4.4% respectively during the same period.

IT 수출로 막아낸 `엔저`…타 산업 불안 여전
정보기술(IT) 수출이 5월에도 엔저 공세를 막아내며 우리나라 무역수지 흑자를 지켜냈다.
하지만 선박•철강 등 다른 주력 산업 부진이 계속돼 여전히 불안한 형국이다.
산업통상자원부가 지난 1일 내놓은 `5월 수출입 동향`에 따르면 5월 수출은 483억7000만달러로 전년 동기 대비 3.2% 증가했다. 수입은 같은 기간 4.8% 감소한 423억4000만달러로 집계됐다.
무역수지는 60억3000만달러 흑자를 기록했다. 16개월 연속 무역수지 흑자인 동시에 2010년 이후 최대 규모 흑자다.
지난해 말부터 거세진 엔저 공세로 수출 산업에 우려가 컸지만 선방하고 있다. 올해 1~5월 수출액은 2300억5900만달러로 지난해에 비해 1.0% 증가했다. 수입액은 2.8% 감소했다.
엔저 위협의 방어막은 IT 산업이었다. 1~5월 스마트폰을 중심으로 한 무선통신기기 수출액은 전년 동기 대비 36.4%나 증가했다. 1~5월 반도체(9.0%), LCD(4.4%) 수출도 지난해에 비해 좋아졌다.
해당 분야에서 국내 산업 경쟁력이 월등히 높아 엔화 가치 하락이 큰 위협요인으로 작용하지 못했다는 분석이다. 여기에 미국과 중국 경제가 완만히 회복한 점도 우리 수출 호조에 도움이 됐다.
반면에 선박, 철강, 자동차 산업은 엔저를 비롯한 대외 악재에서 자유롭지 못했다. 1~5월 선박 수출은 지난해에 비해 32.5%나 줄었다. 철강과 자동차 수출도 같은 기간 11.8%, 1.5%씩 감소했다.
대 일본 수출은 엔저 직격탄을 맞는 모습이었다. 5월 대일 수출은 전년 대비 11.7% 뒷걸음질쳤다. 대일 수출 증가율은 지난 2월부터 4개월 연속 하락했다.
산업부는 “세계적 기술력을 보유한 IT 품목 선전으로 현재 우리 수출이 비교적 선방하고 있으나 선박•철강 수출은 부진하다”며 “엔저 장기화에 대비해 수출 경쟁력 제고와 적극적 시장 개척 노력이 필요한 상황”이라고 진단했다.
