SEOUL, KOREA – On Tuesday, South Korean President Park Geun-hye held a summit with Mozambican President Armando Emílio Guebuza in Seoul, marking her 100 days in office. The recent summit was the second held on home turf after the summit meeting with Uganda President Yoweri Musevani on May 30. Thus, the prospect of Korean companies making inroads into Africa widens since President Park held her first two summits at the Blue House with African heads of state.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of South Korea-Mozambique diplomatic relations, President Park and Mozambican President Armando talked about ways to cooperate in trade, investment, energy sources, development, ODA, the New Village Movement (or Saemaul Movement) and international affairs.
Above all, the summit revolved around trade cooperation in the economic sector between South Korea and resource-rich Mozambique, which has grown rapidly at a pace of 7% annually since 2007.
Numerous Korean companies have already been doing business in Mozambique. Hyosung has been engaged in the construction of solar power plants and power grids; KOGAS (Korea Gas Corporation) is exploring natural gases and building city gas pipe networks.
Trade between the two nations jumped fivefold from USD 25 million in 2007 to USD 110 million in 2012.

박 대통령, 모잠비크 대통령과 정상회담
박근혜 대통령은 취임 100일째를 맞은 4일 아르만도 게부자 모잠비크 대통령과 정상회담을 하고 양국간 교류 협력 강화 방안을 논의했다. 박 대통령이 국내에서 외국 국가정상과 회담한 것은 지난달 30일 요웨리 무세베니 우간다 대통령에 이어 두번째다. 취임 후 두번의 정상회담을 아프리카 지역 국가 정상과 함으로써 국내 기업의 `떠오르는 대륙` 아프리카 진출기회가 더욱 확대될 전망이다.
박 대통령은 모잠비크와 수교 20주년을 맞아 열린 이날 회담에서 통상•투자, 에너지 자원, 새마을운동, 개발협력, 공적개발원조(ODA), 국제무대 협력방안 등 각종 분야 관심사에 대해 의견을 나눴다.
특히 모잠비크가 천연가스와 원유, 기타 광물 등 풍부한 에너지 자원을 바탕으로 2007년 이후 매년 7% 안팎의 고성장세를 이어가는 아프리카의 새로운 유망국가여서 정상회담은 경제부문의 교류협력 강화에 초점이 맞춰졌다.
모잠비크에는 우리 기업들도 많이 진출해 있어 한국가스공사가 천연가스 개발 및 발전용 및 도시가스 배관망 건설 사업을 진행 중이며 효성 등이 태양광발전소 및 송배전망 건설 사업에 참여하고 있다.
양국간 교역도 확대 추세다. 2007년 2500만달러였던 양국간 교역량은 지난해 1억1000만달러로 5배가량 증가했다. 개발 협력 분야에서도 모잠비크는 우리나라의 ODA 중점 협력국으로 정부는 1987년부터 지난해까지 총 3534만달러(무상 672만달러, 유상 2861만달러)를 모잠비크에 지원했다.
정부는 특히 모잠비크와 앞으로 농촌개발과 인적자원개발, 전력•교통 분야를 중심으로 협력을 계속할 예정이다.
청와대는 “모잠비크와 신뢰외교 구축 및 경제협력 확대를 통해 21세기 세계 경제의 새로운 지평으로 떠오른 아프리카에 대한 우리 국민과 대ㆍ중소기업의 진출 기회가 크게 확대될 것으로 기대된다"고 밝혔다.
