SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics came on top in terms of smartphone sales throughout the world, excluding North America, in the first quarter of this year. According to Hong Kong-based market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung Electronics grabbed the largest market share in four major regions, including Asia, Europe, South America, and Middle East/Africa, in the first quarter of this year.
Samsung Electronics grabbed a share of 44 percent in Europe, while commanding a share of 41 percent each in South America and the Middle East/African market.
In Europe, Samsung's Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S3 Mini enjoyed rising popularity, while in South America, its Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Y, and Galaxy S drew marked robust performance.
In Asia, Samsung achieved a market share of 30 percent, dwarfing its rival Apple's 15 percent. In North America, however, Samsung grabbed a 28-percent share, lagging behind Apple's 38 percent.
