Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC) announced the appointment of Kim Han-wook, the former Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, as its sixth chairman. The Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport appointed Kim as the new chairman of JDC, effective as of June 7, 2013, among two candidates recommended by the Steering Committee of Public Institutions. The new chairman’s inauguration ceremony was held on June 10 at Jeju Science Park.
At the inauguration ceremony, Chairman Kim said “JDC will organize and operate special task force teams in cooperation with the central and local governments, and foreign consulting companies, among others, to attract private investment. JDC will also establish strategies for each market segmentation while turning away from holding investor relations activities for an unspecified general public. JDC will organize an investment network including Korean diplomatic missions overseas and KOTRA, and will introduce the outsourcing system to foreign consulting companies and compensate according to their results.”
Born in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo City, Jeju, Chairman Kim graduated from Ohyeon High School and received a master’s in Public Administration at Korea University Graduate School of Policy Studies. He has served as General Director for Planning & Management of Jeju Province; President of the National Archives of Korea under the then Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs; and Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province from 2004 and 2007.
Kim is very familiar with Jeju and maintains national connections via a wide network of officials in the central government and National Assembly. For this reason, he is expected to show his remarkable ability to resolve pending issues regarding projects designed to turn Jeju into a free international city. Chairmen of JDC serve three-year terms and can be re-appointed for additional terms on an annual basis.
