SEOUL, KOREA – The Obama administration has begun helping Middle Eastern allies build up their defenses against Iran’s growing arsenal of cyberweapons, and will be doing the same in Asia to contain computer-network attacks from North Korea, according to senior American officials.
According to New York Times, US President Barrack Obama signed a presidential directive, which underscored how the Obama administration is trying to prepare itself and its allies for cyberattacks.
The presidential directive included the declaration that the US reserved the right to take “anticipatory action” against “imminent threats,” a reference, it seemed, to the kind of crippling infrastructure attacks that Iran appears to be working on against American and allied targets, according to New York Times.
Countries in the Persian Gulf, which have signed up for help in countering Iran’s computer abilities, were not disclosed. In Asia, however, the countries most worried about being struck by North Korean computer attacks are South Korea and Japan, according to relevant American officials.

미국이 북한과 이란 해커들의 공격을 받고 있는 우리나라를 포함한 아시아와 중동 지역 동맹국을 도와 `해커와의 전쟁`에 나선다.
버락 오바마 미국 대통령은 이를 위해 최근 두 지역의 동맹국들이 컴퓨터 방어 시스템을 구축할 수 있도록 지원한다는 내용의 대통령 훈령에 서명했다고 UPI통신, 뉴욕타임스(NYT) 등 외신이 8일(현지시간) 보도했다.
미 정부 관계자들에 따르면 새 훈령은 연방정부 여러 기관이 동맹국들과 협력해 동맹국 각국의 핵심 인프라 시스템을 해킹 공격으로부터 방어하는 것을 주요 내용으로 담고 있다.
`즉각적인 위협`이 예상될 때는 미국 정부가 선행 조치를 취할 권리가 있다는 내용도 포함된 것으로 알려졌다. 구체적인 지원 대상 국가가 공개되지 않았지만 미국 안보 당국 관계자들은 그러나 아시아에서는 북한의 사이버 공격이 우려되는 한국과 일본에 미국이 지원할 것이라고 밝혔다.
