SEOUL, KOREA – South Korea's exports of information technology (IT) and IT-related trade surplus hit all-time highs in May as global demand for Korea's smartphones and semiconductors remained robust, government data showed Sunday.
South Korea's exports of tech products gained 17.2% y-o-y to USD 15.15 billion last month, according to data by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. The country's trade surplus in the tech sector also hit an all-time high of USD8.27 billion in May.
Growth in May IT exports was led by mobile phones and semiconductors. Exports of mobile phones ascended 61.2% to USD 2.49 billion while those of semiconductors swelled 17.2% to USD 4.96 billion.
Exports of smartphones ballooned 46.9& to USD 1.4 billion while smartphone parts surged 99.9% to USD 1.04 billion. Exports of memory semiconductors jumped 27% to USD 2.23 billion while exports of SoCs increased 10.6% to USD 2.09 billion.
Meanwhile, exports of display panels contracted 7.8% to USD 2.5 billion.
In the January-May period, the cumulative exports and trade surplus in the IT sector also reached record highs of USD 67.97 billion and USD35.07 billion, respectively.

5월 IT 수출 151억 5000만달러, 무역수지 82억 7000만 달러•••사상 최대
5월 정보기술(IT) 수출과 무역수지가 사상 최대치를 기록했다.
미래창조과학부가 집계한 IT수출입 동향에 따르면 IT 수출은 전년 동월대비 17.2% 증가한 151억5000만달러, 무역수지는 82억7000만달러 흑자를 달성했다. IT 무역수지가 80억달러 이상 흑자를 기록한 것은 5월이 처음이다.
미래부는 세계 IT 경기 회복과 더불어 스마트폰 •반도체 등 우리나라 주요 IT 수출 품목이 글로벌 시장에서 두각을 나타난 결과로 풀이했다.
5월 IT 수출은 휴대폰과 반도체가 견인했다.
휴대폰 수출은 61.2%가 증가한 24억9000만달러, 반도체는 17.2%가 늘어난 49억6000만달러로 집계됐다.
스마트폰 수출 규모는 46.9% 증가한 14억달러를, 반제품(부분품)은 99.9% 늘어난 10억4000만달러다.
모바일 메모리반도체 수요 증대와 수급 개선에 따른 단가 상승으로 메모리반도체 수출은 27% 증가한 22억3000만달러를 기록했다.
시스템반도체 수출도 20억9000만달러로 10.6%가 늘었다.
반면, 디스플레이 패널 수출은 7.8% 감소한 25억달러로 집계됐다. 중국 절전형 가전제품 보조금 정책 종료에 따른 수요 감소와 LCD패널 단가 하락에서 비롯됐다.
이같은 수출 호조로 올해 1∼5월 IT 수출(679억7000만달러)과 IT 무역수지 흑자(350억7000만달러)도 역대 최대다.
미래부는 세계 IT시장의 완만한 회복세가 예상되고, 반도체•휴대폰 경쟁력 강화로 수출 증가가 당분간 지속될 것으로 전망했다.
