SEOUL, KOREA – Two Japanese materials and parts companies - Nippon Electronic Glass Co. (NEG) and Kuroda Electric Co. – have decided to invest USD 260 million in South Korea, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).
In Tokyo, the MOTIE on Tuesday held a Korea-bound investment presentation and an investment report session with approximately 250 officials from Japanese parts and materials companies in attendance. On the part of Korea, the MOTIE, Samsung Electronics, LG Display, SK Hynix, etc. were present.
At the event, NEG announced that it will invest USD 220 million in building its second electric glass substrate production plant in South Korea. In partnership with LG Display, NEG is currently running a production line in Paju. Once the construction of the second plant is completed, NEG will own the entire process of OLED manufacturing in South Korea.
Kuroda Electric Co. said it will invest USD 36 million in creating an industrial park solely dedicated to Japanese companies in Kimhae.

일본전기초자•쿠로다전기, 한국에 2억6000만달러 투자 신고
일본 소재부품기업 일본전기초자(NEG)와 구로다전기가 한국에 2억6000만달러(약 2900억원) 규모 투자를 결정했다고 11일 산업통상자원부가 밝혔다.
산업부는 이날 일본 도쿄에서 현지 소재부품 기업 관계자 250여명이 참석한 가운데 한국투자설명회와 투자신고식을 개최했다. 우리 측에서는 산업부를 비롯해 KOTRA, 삼성전자, LG디스플레이, SK하이닉스 등이 참여했다.
이 자리에서 NEG는 한국에 제2기 전기유리기판 공장을 설립하기로 하고 2억2000만달러 투자 계획을 신고했다. LG디스플레이와 합작 형태로 경기도 파주에 생산라인을 가동 중인 NEG는 이번 투자를 계기로 한국에 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 전체 공정을 완성한다.
구로다전기는 김해에 일본 기업 전용 공단을 조성하겠다는 계획을 발표했다. 일반적인 공장 설립이 아닌 산업단지 개발 후 기업을 유치하는 새로운 형태 투자다. 구로다전기의 투자 규모는 3600만달러다.
산업부는 두 회사 외에 현지 기업을 대상으로 한국 산업 현황과 투자지원 정책을 소개했다. 권평오 산업부 무역투자실장은 “엔저 같은 단기적인 경제상황에 좌우되지 않고 중장기적인 관점에서 상호 윈윈하는 전략적 투자를 확대하자”고 말했다.
