No. of Outbound Travelers Increases Sharply Despite Economic Slump

SEOUL, KOREA - The number of Koreans who traveled to foreign countries marked a robust growth despite economic slowdown. According to the "2012 National Travel Trend" survey by the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute, the number of the population who made overseas travel more than once in 2012 totaled 13.73 million, the highest in six years.

This survey was conducted with a sample group of 6,638 people with the age of over 15 throughout the country. The number of the population who made overseas trips fell to 9.49 million in 2009 from 11.9 million in 2008 and 13.3 million in 2007 and turned up to 12.4 million in 2010 and 12.6 million in 2011.

The per-capita spending for overseas trips stood at 2.51 million won in 2012, similar to 2.54 million won in 2011 and up from 1.81 million won in 2010.

The per-capita length of overseas trip, however, fell to 9.65 days in 2012 from 11.36 days in 2011 and 10.26 days in 2010.
