SEOUL, KOREA - Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and venture capitalist, will invest in Hanmi Semiconductor. This is the first time for the billionaire entrepreneur to invest in a Korean company. According to investment banking sources on June 16, Thiel has signed a contract to purchase 376,927 shares (1.48% of total) of Hanmi Semiconductor at a per-share price of 10,000 won through PinPoint Investment Group.
The reason Thiel made an investment in the semiconductor equipment maker is he rated its technical capability and growth potential highly. The company was ranked No. 2 by U.S. research firm VLSI Research in its 2013 semiconductor equipment customer satisfaction survey.
At 45 years of age, Thiel was ranked 293rd on the Forbes 400 in 2011, with a net worth of $1.5 billion as of March 2012. He currently serves as chairman of global hedge fund firm Clarium Capital, managing partner of venture capital firm Founders Fund, and co-founder and investment committee chair of Mithril Capital Management.
