SEOUL, KOREA – KT Group’s KT Media Hub will launch a HTML5-based Olleh TV service next month. KT Media Hub said Monday that it will launch a HTML5 platform in July and make efforts to soup up interactive contents. To that end, KT Media Hub will invest a total of KRW 25 billion (including development costs) by the end of this year.
Olleh TV, KT Media Hub’s IPTV brand, which saw the number of its subscribers exceed 4million last year, has opted for next-generation Internet standard HTML5 in order to avoid heavy dependence on certain platforms developed by Google or Apple. HTML 5 excels in openness and extendibility. The HTML 5-based smart IPTV service will allow anyone to make and distribute TV-based contents without living up to the standards or requirement set by Google or Apple.
KT Media Hub’s HTML5-based platform will be introduced at the Mobile Asia Expo Developers’ Conference, slated for the end of this month.

KT미디어허브가 다음달 HTML5 기반 `올레TV` 서비스를 내놓는다.
KT미디어허브(대표 김주성)는 7월 HTML5 플랫폼 출시와 양방향 콘텐츠 활성화에 나선다고 17일 밝혔다. 이를 위해 연말까지 개발 비용을 포함해 총 250억원을 투자한다.
지난해 400만명 가입자를 넘긴 KT미디어허브의 IPTV인 `올레TV`는 차세대 인터넷표준으로 자리 잡은 HTML5를 채택했다. 구글이나 애플 등 특정 플랫폼 종속을 피하기 위해서다. HTML5는 개방성과 확장성이 우수한 것이 특징이다. 구글•애플 등이 제시하는 표준이나 규격을 맞추지 않아도 누구나 TV 기반 콘텐츠를 제작해 유통할 수 있다.
KT미디어허브는 이달 말 열릴 예정인 모바일 아시아 엑스포 개발자 콘퍼런스에서 HTML5 통합 플랫폼을 심층 소개한다. 또 10월에는 세계 최대 유선통신사업자 행사 중 하나인 브로드밴드 월드 포럼에서 HTML5 통합 플랫폼을 선택한 올레TV를 소개할 예정이다.
김주성 KT미디어허브 대표는 “올레TV가 주도할 TV플랫폼의 혁명은 피처폰에서 스마트폰으로 진화해온 모바일 혁명 이상의 의미가 있다. 플랫폼을 넘나드는 콘텐츠 융합, 서비스 다양화, 사업자와 개발자, 사용자 간 생태계 정착의 성공을 목격하게 될 것”이라며 “과거 휴대통신사업이 CDMA 방식을 택해 기술 개발에 뛰어들어 세계 IT 시장의 중심에 자리 잡은 것과 같이 HTML5 통합 플랫폼으로 IPTV 서비스의 종주국으로 자리매김 하겠다”고 말했다.
