Seoul, Korea - Huawei revealed its ambition to become the world’s largest smartphone company by acquiring Nokia.
At an interview with the Financial Times, Richard Yu, the Chairman of Huawei Consumer Business Group, commented, “it depends on the intention of Nokia, but the combination will create a significant synergy.”
Huawei had not made any large-scale M&A so far. The comment by Yu hinted his plan to bet big in the fast-growing mobile phone market and overcome Samsung Electronics and Apple.
Yu anticipated that the number of smartphone makers will be narrowed to 3 to 4. Even without Nokia, Huawei is already the third largest smartphone maker in the world, after Samsung Electronics and Apple. Huawei is targeting to sell 55 to 60 million smartphones this year. Yu believed that the growth of current smartphone market has slowed, because of short supply of parts.
Huawei is also investing heavily in the next-generation smartphone technologies to make slimmer and faster smartphones than those of Samsung Electronics. The company is actively making research on the wearable smart devices, such as Google Glass and Apple’s smart watch.
Huawei introduced Ascend P6, the world’s slimmest smartphone with 6.18mm thickness, in London on the 18th (local time). The new product is powered by 1.5㎓, quad-core processor, and has 4.7 inch screen and 5 megapixel front camera. Ascend P6 is also the world’s first smartphone with 5 megapixel front camera, while most of the smartphones come with 2 megapixel ones.
Yu added at the interview with the FT, “I no longer want to sell the feature phones. Huawei will become a company that makes the best mobile phones at rational prices.”

화웨이는 대규모 인수에 나선 적이 없다. 유 회장의 이번 발언은 급성장하는 휴대폰 시장에 승부수를 띄워 삼성전자와 애플을 넘어서겠다는 의지다.
유 회장은 스마트폰 시장이 3개~4개 기업으로 통합될 것으로 예측했다. 노키아가 쓰는 마이크로소프트의 윈도폰 플랫폼은 여전히 부족하다고 지적했다. 화웨이는 구글 안드로이드 운용체계(OS)를 쓴 스마트폰을 주로 내놓는다.
유 회장은 윈도폰은 점유율이 너무 낮아 성공을 논하기 어렵다고 밝혔다. 그는 “윈도폰은 낮은 점유율에도 라이선스비를 받는 것이 약점”이라며 “안드로이드는 공짜”라고 말했다.
노키아를 인수하지 않아도 화웨이는 삼성전자와 애플 뒤를 이어 3위 스마트폰 제조사다. 올해 화웨이는 5500만대~6000만대 규모 스마트폰 판매 목표를 세웠다. 유 회장은 현재 스마트폰 시장은 부품 공급이 달려 성장 속도가 느려졌다고 설명했다.
그는 “20년 전 화웨이에 아무것도 없었지만 지금은 최고 품질 스마트폰을 만든다”며 “경쟁사와 격차를 좁히고 나아가 그들을 이끌고 싶다”고 강조했다. 유 회장은 “값싸고 기본적인 기능을 갖춘 피처폰이 스마트하게 인터넷에 연결되는 제품으로 변신하고 자체 브랜드 영역에서 팔릴 것”이라고 예측했다.
화웨이는 삼성전자보다 더 얇고 가벼우며 빠른 차세대 스마트폰 기술 투자에 집중 중이다. 구글 글라스나 애플 스마트와치 등과 유사한 입는 스마트 기기 개발에도 한창이다.
화웨이는 18일(현지시각) 영국 런던에서 6.18㎜ 두께의 세계에서 가장 얇은 스마트폰 `어센드 P6`를 발표했다. 이 제품은 1.5㎓ 쿼드코어 프로세서, 4.7인치 화면, 500만 화소 전면 카메라에 무게는 120g이다. 전면에 500만 화소를 쓴 제품은 어센드 P6가 처음이다. 업계는 대부분 200만 화소를 쓴다.
유 회장은 “더 이상 피처폰을 판매하지 않고 싶다”며 “화웨이는 합리적인 가격에 최고 휴대폰을 만드는 회사가 될 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
한편, 로이터는 화웨이가 노키아 인수에 관심이 없다는 입장을 보였다고 보도했다. 노키아는 언급을 피했다.
