SEOUL, KOREA – Pohang University of Science and Technology or POSTECH has topped the Times Higher Education’s 100 Under 50 Universities list for two consecutive years.
The Times Higher Education (THE), a weekly magazine based in London, ranked POSTECH first in THE 100 Under 50, a list of the best universities under the age of 50.
THE said POSTECH topped the chart for its excellence in financial and institutional support, teaching and research. Swiss university, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne followed in second place and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) finished third.
Thirteen indicators across five areas - research, citations, teaching, international outlook and industry income - were taken into account in ranking universities.
POSTECH scored 88.2 in citations and got full marks in industry income. Only two Korean universities - POSTECH and KAIST- made the 100 list.

포스텍, 더타임스 평가 `성장 가능성 높은 대학` 2년째 세계 1위
포스텍이 세계에서 가장 성장 가능성이 높은 대학으로 2년 연속 뽑혔다.
세계대학평가를 발표해온 영국 더 타임스(Times Higher Education)가 실시한 2013년도 `설립 50년 이내 세계대학평가(100 Under 50)`에서 포스텍이 또다시 세계 1위에 올랐다.
영국 더 타임스는 20일자에서 설립 50년 이내 대학을 대상으로 한 세계대학평가에서 포스텍이 재정적, 정책적 지원은 물론이고 우수한 교육, 연구성과로 1위를 차지했다고 밝혔다. 이번 대학평가에서 스위스 로잔공대와 한국 KAIST, 홍콩과기대, 어바인캘리포니아대가 뒤를 이었다.
더 타임스는 교육여건과 연구실적, 논문당 인용도, 산업체 수입, 국제화 수준 등 5개 분야 13개 지표에 대해 상대평가를 실시해 점수를 산출했다.
포스텍은 논문당 피인용수를 평가하는 인용도부문에서는 88.2점을, 산업체로부터 수입을 평가하는 산업체 수입은 만점을 받는 등 총점 75점을 차지했다. 교육과 연구, 국제화 등 전반적 부문에서 점수가 상승했다. 2위를 차지한 로잔공대는 71.9점, KAIST는 67.4점을 차지했다.
이번 평가에서는 100위권에 영국소재 대학이 18곳, 호주가 13곳, 미국 8곳이 이름을 올려 영미권 대학이 강세를 보였다. 한국은 포스텍과 KAIST 두 개 대학만 100위권에 올랐다.
