SEOUL, KOREA - Social network service Facebook exposed the email and telephone information of 6 million users throughout the world due to a bug.
Facebook's security team announced on June 22 that a bug occurred at the "My Information Download" feature, thereby exposing email and telephone information of Facebook members. This feature is a service that stores messages, photos, and email address of Facebook friends on personal computers.
Facebook said that from last year when the bug started working, there have been cases where members unknowingly downloaded the telephone and email information of unknown persons when they download the record of their activities. In other words, the email and telephone information of those who are listed on contact list or those who have non-friend relations, are exposed without their permission.
Facebook said, "There is no evidence that this bug has been used maliciously. Although we are disappointed and upset by this bug problem, no damages such as criminal activities have been reported so far." Facebook realized the bug issue last week and fixed the bug in one day.
